Beyond the Sale: Building a Disaster-Ready Culture in Your Brokerage

Are you ready for the storm that’s already knocking at the door?

As real estate leaders, we talk a lot about guiding our teams to hit targets, build relationships, and secure listings. But what about preparing your team—and your clients—for something far less predictable: a disaster that turns business and lives upside down? In our article “Proactive Disaster Planning: A Real Estate Leader’s Guide to Supporting Agents,” when it comes to the unexpected—wildfires, floods, tornadoes, or hurricanes—being ready isn’t a nice extra. It’s a necessity.

When you empower your agents with knowledge about local disaster risks—and the tools to support clients in those moments—you do more than protect property. You build trust, reinforce your brand, and position your team as true advisors in any scenario. The “why” is simple: disasters don’t wait for convenient timing, and when they strike, the agents who are prepared will be the ones clients remember. The “how” happens when you create a plan, insert it into your culture, and make preparedness a part of your regular conversation (not just a checkbox when storms months away look scary).

Here’s a quick tip you can use this week: ask each team member to identify one disaster-hazard your market commonly faces (for example, flood zones, fire-prone regions or tornado alleys) and share one actionable item they will learn or add to their client consultation around that hazard. The power lies in small, consistent steps—not waiting for something dramatic to force you into action. In one brokerage I worked with, the leader started each Monday meeting with a “risk-clock” moment—just 2-3 minutes of “what could go wrong this week” and “how are we helping our clients or ourselves be more resilient?” Instantly, preparedness became familiar, not fear-based.

If you’re a real estate leader who wants to take this from a bullet-point handout to a real advantage for your team, you’ll want to know how to how to structure these conversations, build a disaster-ready culture, and turn being prepared into a competitive differentiator. We dive deeper into this in our blog—check it out here:

Stay ahead, stay ready—and your team will thank you.

Great reminder, Darryl! 🌟 Preparedness goes beyond the sale—it’s about truly caring for our clients and community. Love the idea of making it part of everyday conversations! 💪🏡

Hi Darryl- I like this idea. In FL we had hurricanes. Agents who are disaster ready, will show their clients the value you bring to the table.

Thank you, Kathy. It's so important in a hurricane prone state like Florida.

I read about more and more homes with fire sprinklers on the roof and not just inside. Fire blankets around the house and in the care are also a good way to go.

Hello Daryl - readiness in countless things is a good thing. The saying, hope for the best, plan for the worst once again comes to mind.

Now in AZ, we are required to take a 3 hour course on Fire, Defraud and Water. Culture can make or break any organization and that end result rests on the shoulders of leadership.
