Pipes. Every House Has Them.

For the new homeowner, especially those who have purchased older homes, the plumbing structure of a home, plumbing can look overwhelming. Often, I have found plumbing to be simple enough that even I can tackle many repairs on my own.

Simplifying it helps me to keep it from being overwhelming. Pipes are one way streets. Water NEVER goes back and forth in the same pipe. A pipe either carries clean water or wastewater.

I have found it easy to replace pipe HOWEVER where it gets complicated is pipes come in many diameters, made of many materials (not to be intermingled) and each material that pipes are made of has it's own connectors or adhesives.

I have found hardware stores to be the best source of advice when working with plumbing BUT before you head to the store it is a good idea to come armed with photos on your cell phone.

How willing are you to learn knowing that the average plumber in the USA charges $150. for a service call and then the clock starts ticking after the $150. service call.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

Dear Bob,

Good advice. Don't bite your fingernails, when working on this.

Excellent advice Dorte Engel . You especially don't want to put your fingers in your mouth when working with wastewater plumbing. 🤪

My house was built in 1968 and has 5 kinds of pipes in it.  Our last home had 8 kinds--the plumber had never seen 2 of them.  Houses built before 1950 are more creatively plumbed than the new ones. Pex has its own language and I am waiting to see if it has its own problems too.

Ah yes, pex. I'm just learning how to use it Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 because pex is more tolerant than any other when it comes to freezing. I know in a post I did years ago I showed a picture from my basement that in a 3' span I had at least 3 types of plumbing in that area. Plastic, Pex, cooper, and maybe galvanized as well.

Here in Florida the 1960s homes often have cast iron pipes. They are evil...lol

I know we have a cast iron stack (vent pipe) Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty and I think that is what goes out to the street as well. The plumbers of that day needed to be burly men.

Thank you Lew Corcoran . If more homeowners would look at what it really takes to do many of the chorus that professionals charge $100.00 an hour for they may see that they could DIY.  Fear of the unknown scares us and then we pay through the nose.
