So Thankful for the Ability to TRAVEL

This month our challenge is Thankful Thoughts, and thanks to Lynn B. Friedman CRS Atlanta, GA 404-617-6375 for hosting this challenge.

Sometimes as we age, traveling is not so easy, if you have trouble walking, or breathing in high-altitude locations.    I know the airline travel part is frustrating often, especially with weather, detours, delays, or cancellations.    When you have allotted only so many days per City, and that gets changed, it can throw off a vacation.

There are places I have been where many of my friends/colleagues said they would never travel to.   Costa Rica was one of them.   Bugs, scorpions, alligators, iguanas, and mosquitoes turned them off.    I was intrigued by the different kinds of monkeys we saw, and some came pretty close to our group.    The howler monkeys and White-headed monkeys were fun to see.  We don't get to see these in Denver unless you visit the zoo.    Did you know Costa Rica has over 200 volcanoes?   A few are still active, and one erupted a couple of days before I got there, and was lucky to land with ash in the air.    Have never been to a coffee plantation before, either, and it was fun to see the process, the fields, and how they harvest the beans.

There are only one State that I have not been to - Alabama, and now with my goals to get my VISA to move to Portugal, this may not happen.

I love the Caribbean islands and have been to a few several times, either directly flying or via a cruise ship.    After the recent Hurricanes, not sure they look the same.

Back several years, a lender friend had just gotten divorced, and she wanted to do a trip to Europe - what fun!  Two weeks, four countries, and so much laughter, we were crying at times!    Lots of culture, photos, and memories!  In 2023, I returned to Europe - Portugal and Spain, what fun.  Portugal is still in my top destinations!   Last year was able to fly to South America - Brazil, Argentina, and Peru and made so many new memories and friends!   This year I visited Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Czeck Republic and returned to the Algarve in Portgual.   Returning to Portugal, just solidified my desire to move there!

When I flew to Montreal a few years ago to spend a long weekend, everyone I met said, if you love our City, you should visit Quebec City.   They said it was very French, smaller, but very quaint.   I did go and LOVED it.

Working on gathering my requirement documents for the VISA to Portugal, and not quite sure how long this will take.  I cannot get an appointment even to make application.   I am still hopeful it will be end of 1st quarter or sometime in 2nd quarter.   Once I move, I can visit all the cities and countries I have yet to see.

The business has been very good to me over the years, and thankful I can travel.  I always said - I only work, so I can travel!

Joan, what an inspiring post! Your love of travel truly shines through every paragraph — and I admire how you’ve turned your adventures into a celebration of gratitude. You’ve seen so much of the world, and it’s wonderful that you’re now working toward your dream of living in Portugal. I completely agree — travel opens our hearts and minds in ways nothing else can. Wishing you smooth sailing (and flying!) as you take this next exciting step!

Good morning, Joan... I travelled internationally and nationally so much from my 20's right into my 70's, both for business and pleasure... at this stage of my life I don't feel I especially need to go anywhere. Just the process of getting ready to travel makes me exhausted thinking about it.

Nina Hollander, Broker I wasn't as fortunate as you to travel when I was young, had to wait until I had some money!   LOL

Hello Joan - I feel fortunate that I was able to see many parts of the world when I was younger.  Although it was primarily for business, traveling seemed much easier in those times especially for the experiences I still remember.   Life is different now.  Overall, I am happy with that.

Travel is one of the great differences between folks today and say 300 years ago when the average person never left the area 50 miles around their home. We live in amazing times.

Good afternoon Joan,

Glad you found traveling to be in your blood! We traveled to so many places I've never regretted all the countries we saw and money we spent! LOL! You learn so much from traveling that you never quite see things in the same way. Your horizons are widen and the exposure definitely expands your thinking..more to pull from that memory box!!!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I SO agree!  The cultures, dining options and of course the views and things to see.   Everything is so different when you leave your "cocoon!"

Joan- I am so excited for you!  I remember my uncle telling me that we had it all wrong. We should travel when we're young and more physically able to climb, etc.
