What to Know Before Building Your Fence

Building a fence is one of those home projects that can add both beauty and value to your property. Whether it is for privacy, safety, or simply to give your yard more structure, a well-built fence makes a world of difference. However, before jumping into the project, there are a few important things every homeowner should know.

Always Check for Permits and Property Lines

Before building a fence, check with your local municipality to see if a permit is needed. Even if one is not required, reviewing local codes and your property survey will save you trouble later. You do not want to find out years down the road that your fence extends onto your neighbor’s property. It is also courteous to discuss your plans with nearby homeowners to avoid misunderstandings.

Call Before You Dig

This step cannot be overlooked. Contact your local utility company to mark underground lines before digging post holes. This simple action prevents costly and dangerous mistakes.

Plan Your Layout Carefully

Use stakes and string to mark the fence line. Check that the layout sits within your property boundary, ideally six inches inside the line to allow for posts and panels. If your yard has uneven ground or slopes, decide early whether a racked or stepped fence design will work best for you.

Choose the Right Materials

Wood remains a popular choice because it offers a natural, classic look. Pressure-treated lumber, cedar, and redwood are all good options. Composite and vinyl fences cost more upfront but require less maintenance. Aluminum and metal designs can also add a sleek, modern touch.

Secure Fence Posts Properly

Use 6x6 posts instead of 4x4s for stronger support, and make sure they are at least 48 inches deep and below the frost line. Add gravel to the bottom of each hole for drainage before setting posts with concrete or expanding foam.

Pay Attention to Hardware and Hinges

Use galvanized or stainless steel screws and nails to prevent rust. When installing a gate, three hinges will provide better support than two, keeping it from sagging over time.

Level and Align Everything

It may sound simple, but keeping your posts plumb and panels level makes all the difference between a fence that looks professional and one that does not.

Building a fence takes patience and preparation, but the results can be rewarding for years to come.
