Small Wonder-Big Benefit ADU's

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are quickly becoming a popular option for homeowners seeking to maximize the potential of their properties. These small, self-contained homes sit on the same lot as the main house and come equipped with everything you need including a separate entrance, kitchen, bathroom, and living area. This makes them a fantastic solution for various living situations.

One of the most significant advantages of ADUs is their versatility. They are ideal for aging parents who want to stay close to their families while maintaining their independence.

Adult children also find ADUs appealing as they can live there while saving up for their first home. Additionally, ADUs offer a cozy space for visiting friends or family members, making them ideal for hosting guests. Homeowners can even rent out these units to generate extra income, providing financial flexibility in today’s housing market. As housing costs continue to rise, many cities are relaxing zoning laws to encourage the development of ADUs, making them more accessible than ever.

Unlike tiny houses, which can be moved and are temporary, ADUs are permanent structures that meet local building codes, ensuring safety and legality. Investing in an ADU may enhance a property’s value but also strengthens family connections by providing a comfortable and private living space for family members, not a new concept. Overall, ADUs represent a smart and innovative choice for modern living, catering to a range of needs and lifestyles while maximizing the potential of residential properties.

What are your thoughts on these small homes?

I would love to come with a better name than ADU. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello Margaret - aspects of everyday life and real estate continue to combine in countless ways.  History plays a role too.   We move forward with thoughts of the past often a part of this ongoing story.  Although talk of accessory dwelling units are a part of some discussions today, I believe we don't have to dig too far to see the concept.  We continue to see their many interpretations.

Good Tuesday morning, Margaret. This is good information to share. Some areas are changing zoning rules to allow ADUs.

It is a good thing. We need flexibility to accommodate family members, caregivers, and others.

Good morning Margaret. When I first heard of ADU's must admit I was not a fan. As time went on and I learned more I became a big fan. Smart communities will adapt and embrace them. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin, With the cost and shortage of housing, smart communities will hopefully adapt and embrace these ADU's

My brother just asked me yesterday about the possibility of having an ADU at his own home, so it's interesting that I now get to read your post about them, haha.

The best advice is to check with zoning.

Hi Margaret,
I think the trend toward ADUs is here to stay.

Margaret they call them ' Casitas' here in my area. It's interesting how a lot of older homes had an ADU and it was perfectly fine.  And then somewhere along the line the codes changed and it was next to impossible to build one.  Now, thankfully, it' been changed and I'm seeing more and more ADU's on properties.
