Is There An Elephant In Your House?

The word monumental means something exceptionally large or important. Can you think of at least one monumental task to do today that doesn’t create a lot of effort? Find something you can do through the act of letting go. Perhaps taking small steps will help motivate you to keep going. By passing through one room at a time, is there somewhere you can start to create more space?

Not letting go is part of an emotional attachment. It ties to a sense of identity tied to the past. Having strong attachments can hold you back. There is no breathing space to let go. When that happens, it is not healthy. Letting go is the first step towards healing. Putting aside all emotional resistance to choices of reason is a monumental decision.

Over the course of my 21-year career as a real estate agent, I've seen things that defy logic. There are choices people make that sabotage a home's potential without the owners even realizing it.

One moment stands out. I opened the front door of a listing and was immediately confronted by a massive piece of furniture. It looked like something that looked like it belonged in a museum, not a modern home. Not only did it dominate the entryway, disrupting the flow and making the space feel cramped and uninviting, it felt medieval. It was too scary to ignore. There was no room to breathe, no sense of welcome. There was an elephant in the room! The harmony of the home was broken before the tour even began.

Why does letting go and staging matter? Every piece in a home should serve a purpose: to create comfort, inspire connection, and invite possibility. Buyers aren't just looking for square footage. They are searching for a feeling of belonging. And that feeling starts the moment the door opens.

If you're preparing to sell, take a hard look at your space. Ask yourself: Does this room feel balanced? If you inherited something that serves no purpose, and you can't image making use of it, how will it help you to sell for the money you need to move on. Sometimes, the most powerful change is simply removing what no longer exists in your mind as a keeper and no longer fits in the home you're trying to sell.

Home again, home again...

Inquiring minds want to know.  How did you resolve that moment of finding that "hephalump" in the house?  Did you have the seller remove their beloved gigantic piece of furniture from the home prior to the sale?  What did you do to restore the harmony of the home?

Alan May - The house was occupied by a Tenant. The Owner lived in a different state. When I went to see the house for the first time, the tenant did not answer the door or let me in. I had the renters phone number. I sent a text and called. They didn't answer. I tried later and tenant answered. Tenant said she had a family emergency.

We rescheduled. The second time I went there I rang the bell. The Tenant talked to me through the door. The excuse was someone took the key out of lock inside and she had no way to unlock the door. As for the back door, tenant said she was never given a key to the back door. What about the garage door and door between the garage and the house. She said garage door never opened.

This went on for some time with different excuses. Each time I called the owner, the Owner said this is a really nice tenant, I have no problem getting rent. When asked when was the last time you were inside your rental home. Answer - on the day I met the tenant and we signed papers for rent by our computers.

Well, I finally did get an appointment. I had to squeeze my body to get through the front door because of the Medeival looking enormous piece of furniture fit for a Medeival King. Each room I went through was cluttered beyond clutter and kids running around. There were 2 families living there (there only should have been one with no kids). Tenant sat at the table and bawled about her mother died and she couldn't part with her mother's stuff.

Bottom line. Seller kept defending the Tenant and the Tenant kept lying to the Landlord. I cancelled my listing.

Good morning, Patricia. I've always loved that expression "how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." People often think that all I do is see pretty houses all day long. They don't have a clue what I see in so many houses... and it's often not very pretty. Having moved many time, myself, I can let go... but there are things I refuse to let go of.

Nina Hollander, Broker - the elephant story is one I always loved. Not all houses are created equal with neat and tidy owners. There were many times I took buyers for showings. Even when a neighborhood had the same floorpan, different address, buyers hated the house that was overcrowed with stuff or not clean and organized. Then they would buy the same floorplan, that would win first prize for beauty. And they paid more for it. And the other one stayed on the market with different realtor signs.

Hello Patricia - like Nina Hollander, Broker, that gargantuan saying came to mind while reading your post.   Today and often, I am reminded of countless examples that are interrelated as well as interconnected.

Good morning! I'm fairly good at getting rid of extra things. hat being said, I was just looking around my office now to see what I'd have to do if I were ever to sell, and I have some extra things that could be removed!

Kat Palmiotti - You're not alone. Stuff accumulates as quickly as dust. It is hard to keep up with stuff. For some reason, stuff always wins and continues to mound.

Sadly, I have witnessed too many people sabotage their own best interests without even realizing it, haha.  That is where a solid agent comes into play, and things can go smoothly if they are willing to listen.

Some times letting go is the best thing to do, with a listing, with a buyer. If they are creating disharmony in your life it is time to move on.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - Getting stuck in the past can often hurt you more than you realize. Living in chaos can be disheartening. It robs joy out of your life.

I appreciate your thoughtful comment.

What a thoughtful share, Patricia Feager ! I really appreciate the way you tied letting go to both emotional healing and the practical side of staging, it makes the message hit home 🙂. Thanks for offering such clear insight that reminds us how small changes can open big doors.

Lew Corcoran - Life experiences are great examples of education we don't get from classes or textbooks. My imagination helps me craft true life stories like this one. Proportions (like furniture) are, in my opinion, more important than size (LxW) balance and composition. And I also know a lot about emotional healing.

Elephants don't all live in Africa or the Zoo - they live in the dwellings of houses where people can't let go.

Good evening Patricia,

Love the photo with the elephant on the wall as you first some in. We can all relate to that visual! If you're thinking of selling yes take a good look at your space and ask yourself if it feels balanced.

Hello, Dorie Dillard Austin TX!

I'm so happy to read your comment! There are so many unusual things we see when listing or showing houses. They are unforgettable! Having space, being able to see what's behind the walls, opening up cabinet and closet doors are all important to make the right decisions. And then we run across an Elephant in the room, and it is shocking! Startling! You dare not get too close - sometimes it's impossible.

Good morning Patricia. over the years the wife and I accumulated a lot of stuff we thought we could never part with. As a result we moved these things, at great cost, from hoe to home. When we were leaving Florida for Chicago we decided it was time to part with a lot of it. Luckily we sold the house to a couple who loved the pieces we decided to leave behind. We were lucky. Sometimes your regret goes away with time and may even become a blessing. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - Moving stuff we don't need is almost always back braking and expensive! Many times, that stuff ends up in the attic, basement (if applicable), storage units, or it stays there where we end up walking around it every day. Humans can be so predictably odd when it comes to stuff.

You were lucky the buyers from FL were more than happy to receive things you no longer wanted. I'll bet you never missed them, either.
