Importance of Baseboards, Really?

By

Remember when baseboards were about 3” tall, boring, and maybe had quarter round on the bottom?  Oh no not today!  Many times, I am involved with folks changing out flooring whether clients buying a home or flipping.  My standard comment don’t forget new baseboards.  You have choices today but what I am seeing the most is the simple 5” plain modern baseboards (picture).

Please understand I would not be changing baseboards just to be stylish, in our world when we were remodeling our own home we went from the 3” with quarter round to the 5 ¼” Colonial as we replaced the flooring, who knows what the next style might be when we change our flooring again.

I am also seeing 7” modern and something new floating or reveal baseboards.  I am sitting in a home writing this with another great idea I will share about in tomorrow’s article!

Dick Betts - Well, isn't that interesting! I wasn't aware of how much taller baseboards where or that the Colonial Quarter Round is less desirable.

Thanks for the information!

Good morning Dick. You are correct. Some do not pay attention to baseboards when installing new flooring. Big mistake. Enjoy your day.

Good morning! I just measured mine since I had no idea - ours are modern style,  5 1/2" tall but are made of Alder wood.

Hi Dick- I've never given much thought to baseboards other than when I have to clean them. I agree, though, I would not change out my baseboards just to be stylish.

I just spent two long weekend changing out our colonial baseboards for modern one. It matches our door frames and looks a lot better.

I spent 10 days at the Arthur Anderson Business school back in the early 90's and remember an entire section on, "it's not about the suit, it's about the shoes, belt and tie." Baseboards are our home's shoes. Now I need a belt and tie... :-)

Trim is expensive but there are lots of ways to be stylish on a budget.

Window trim especially, if just simple pine boards is the simple cottage look the builder wants or all the home DIY builder can afford, great. But adding a simple pencil trim reveal board, a separator with overhang jazzes up the look too. Like eye liner subtle but just a different transition.

Do you know how to run a router? More luxurious stains can help elevate the look too Dick Betts !
