Benefits of Maryland's Homestead Tax Credit

Maryland Homestead Tax Credit protects homeowners in Baltimore County and Baltimore City from significant property tax increases.

When home values increase, so can your taxes.  Maryland's Homestead Credit limits how much your taxable assessment can rise. Even if your home value jumps significantly, your county can only tax a small portion of that increase each year, usually capped at 4% to 10%. That percentage is based on the county. This means your tax bill will rise gradually and predictably, avoiding sudden shocks.

Maryland stands out because it offers protection from sudden property tax increases, rather than a flat tax break. This is beneficial for long-time homeowners, seniors on fixed incomes, and buyers in rapidly appreciating neighborhoods.

More reasons to buy before the end of the year.

If you buy a home and move in before the year ends, you can apply for the Homestead Credit sooner, protecting yourself from future tax increases. Waiting until next year delays this protection.

Simple to apply, visit the Maryland SDAT website, search for your property, and fill out the brief Homestead Application. If a code is needed, the website provides it instantly. The process takes only a few minutes,

The Homestead Credit is a valuable benefit that many homeowners in Maryland, including those in Baltimore County and Baltimore City, often overlook. It is simple to apply for and can save you thousands over time.

Please verify that you are signed up. You only need to do it once.

Good evening Margaret,

This is important information to get out to Maryland property owners, each state is different. We also have the Homestead Exemption and now don't have to wait to file for it. A buyer can sign up for it as soon as they close!

I love that this is offered in your area, and I am not sure if it is offered in my area or not, but every little bit counts when people are on a fixed income.
