DON'T LET THANKSGIVING BITE BACK... BEFORE YOU SHARE THE TURKEY...

HOLIDAY FOODS PETS SHOULD AVOID

"I don’t get a seat at the Thanksgiving dinner table? This is a-paw-ling."

Careful what you feed your pets on Thanksgiving DayThanksgiving Day is only a few days away, bringing with it all the food, family, fun, and gratitude we look forward to each year. For pet owners, though, it’s also a reminder to stay alert about what ends up in your furry friend’s bowl (or what they may swipe from under the table). No one wants to spend the holiday at the emergency vet hospital.

Those big, pleading eyes might make it tempting to share a bite of your feast, but many traditional Thanksgiving foods can be harmful to pets. To keep everyone safe and happy, it’s important to know which treats are okay to share and which should stay off-limits.

As a pet mom, I know how easy it is to get caught up in the excitement and want to include our four-legged family members in the celebration. But it’s not always the best idea. So here’s my annual list of tips on what NOT to feed your pets on Thanksgiving Day—and what you can safely share.

"My family told me not to beg today. I told them I couldn’t quit doing that ‘cold turkey."

9 Things Not Safe To Feed Your Cats And Dogs On Thanksgiving Day

  1. Bones: turkey bones can lacerate, obstruct and even puncture your pets' internal organs. Save the turkey bones for the broth.

  2. Onions: Onions, scallions and onion powder, found in stuffing and used as a general seasoning, can destroy your dog's or cat's red blood cells, causing anemia. Avoid garlic, and seasonings such as sage, too.

  3. Corn on the cob: which can cause intestinal obstruction, a very serious (and potentially fatal) medical condition.

  4. Avocados:  which produce a fungicidal toxin called “persin,” poisonous to many animals. It causes heart damage, as well. In other words, NO guacamole dip!

  5. Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins contain a toxin that can cause kidney damage to both dogs and cats.

  6. Chocolate: Chocolate can actually be fatal to your dog or cat; so all those sweets must be kept well out of reach. And while you're at it, keep caffeine-based foods, drinks out of reach, as well.

  7. Ham: is a fatty food that can upset a dog's or cat's stomach, as well as cause pancreatitis, vomiting and diarrhea.

  8. Sweets: whether it's pecan pie, or pumpkin or apply pie, a tiny bit will probably not do damage, but in general it's best to avoid feeding sugary foods to dogs and cats.

  9. Alcohol: what more needs be said on this subject? And it's a good idea not to leave any alcoholic drinks standing about if your dog or cat is not supervised.

"You can trust your dog to guard your house, but you can’t trust your dog to guard your sandwich."

If your pets happen to ingest any of these "no-no" foods on Thanksgiving Day, call your veterinarian as quickly as possible. Quick action on your part could well prevent more costly and serious complications from developing.

TAKE A QUIZ: WHICH FOOD IS MOST TOXIC TO DOGS?

7 Things Safe To Feed Your Cats & Dogs On Thanksgiving Day

  1. Boneless turkey well cooked and in small amounts (but NO skin, gravy or stuffing!) Keep in mind that some pets will suffer from pancreatitis no matter how "clean" the turkey you feed them
  2. Sweet potatoes (but plain with no butter, salt, other additives for flavor)
  3. Plain pumpkin
  4. Green beans
  5. Carrots
  6. Peas
  7. Apples

Great info and as the caretaker of Mr. Whiskey, he wanted you to know he approves this message - even though his bottomless pit appetite wishes it were not true 😂

Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP Mr. Whiskey is more than welcome. Both my dog, Bingo, and my cat, Taj, think that anything that passes our lips should pass theirs.

Nina Hollander, Broker -It's surprising how many people don't know about what they cannot give their pets. I hope your article gets spread far and wide. Those are mighty important tips and toxins for pets that many people don't know about - especially younger generations just getting started in life who may not know any of the no-no foods for dogs and cats. And of course, there are no-no's for house plants too.

Loved the humor you sprinkled it - they were really funny!

I am wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. I'll bet your house will smell delicious!!!

Hello Miss Nina Hollander, Broker  - I agree it is tempting to want to share the food we eat with our pets, yet doing so can harm them.  The approved list is a great list any dog would love, and they won't know they are not getting all of what we eat.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist hi again, Kathleen... in my house... not just my dog... my kitty also loves people food that we might give him. Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Hello Nina, off to the mountains tomorrow and this is the first time in 4 years that we will have no families coming up that has dogs.  So not worry this year about the dogs getting into the food.

Will Hamm our dog has been trained not to beg. So fortunately he's not a bother.

Nina this is a time of year to be thankful and share, BUT sharing the Thanksgiving food with pets as you so well pointed out is not a good idea.

George Souto hi George... too many pet owners really have no clue about what human food they can or can't feed their pets.

Hi Nina- I'm glad you shared this. Oh yes, those puppy-dog eyes get me everytime but it's important to remember that just because we can eat it doesn't mean our dogs or cats should.

Kathy Streib my husband always laughs that ours don't beg from me... they know I don't give in. As for Chris... he's an easy touch.

Nina, Lucy does want to see what I am eating, but still stays her distance.  I do give her little pieces of chicken.  If there is seasoning, she won't eat it.

Joan Cox good morning, Joan... Taj seems to want to put anything in his mouth that I put in mine. In this regard he's more of a dog than a cat!

Nina Hollander, Broker that is unusual!   I know Lucy REALLY likes potato chips, and has tried to get one out of my hand before it went into my mouth!

Good morning Nina. When we had our yorkie he liked nothing on your list of good stuff or bad stuff. He did have one favorite, deli thin sliced London Broil, not regular roast beef. Spoiled but practical. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin very fancy, Wayne. Our dogs have always loved anything we give them.

I have a feeling that pets are anxious to beg for scraps off the Thanksgiving table, haha.  Is it good or bad for pets to get scraps from a dinner table?

Nov 25, 2025 07:18 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Brian England pets like stuff off the table at every meal. So important to train them not to beg or expect.

Kelly McGovern hi Kelly... there's sharing and then there's sharing. I've found that many pet owners really don't know what's dangerous for their dogs and cats. I'm careful because my fur babies are my babies.

Norman has a little chicken every day and on Thanksgiving he'll have a little turkey and I'm sure he'll be happy.  The other day we went to one of Gary's favorite places for lunch (take out for a picnic) and he also got Sweet Potato Fries - which were BTW the best ones I've ever tried. Yum.   We gave a little bite to Norman and low and behold he loved it.  So he got a little bit more.  We were both surprised a dog would like sweet potatoes!!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I love sweet potato fries when done nice and crispy. My Bingo will eat anything you put in front of him.

Expert guidance. Exceptional results.

This was a timely share with so much practical value, Nina Hollander, Broker, reminding us how easy it is to overlook what’s safe for our pets during the holiday rush. Thanks for laying it out so clearly and with a touch of humor too 🙂. It’s the kind of guidance that sticks and helps keep the season joyful for the whole family!

Lew Corcoran hi Lew... I do this reminder annually. People seem to need that reminder... something about holidays that makes them forget what's good for their pets and what's not.
