Motivational Monday…Let’s Give Each Other a Break

How often has this happened to you?
While trying to get out of the car without spilling your drink or dropping your phone, you are oblivious to the person next to you waiting for you to get out or shut the door so they can pull forward into the space.

At some point, the driver honks and you realize your oops moment and shut the door.

Or…vice versa…you’re the person waiting.

This happened to us this week. We were the offenders with our open door.

Depending upon our mood, when we find ourselves in that situation…we may say or think not-so-nice thoughts such as  Hello..wake up or Anytime now…just sitting here waiting.

However, not this time. When Larry (ok, I just threw him under the bus) realized he was keeping the driver waiting after the honk, he apologized and quickly shut the door.

The icing on the cake this day was when the driver parked and got out, they came over and apologized for honking.

How often does that happen??

This reminded me of the importance of giving each other a break…the benefit of the doubt. We’re often so quick to judge someone’s actions. We jump to conclusions and are often wrong.

This is going on my list of skills to strengthen.

When you choose to see the good in others, you end up finding the good in yourself.

John Spence

The world would be a happier, more peaceful place if we all tried to understand instead of judging, paused before reacting, and gave each other the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming the worst.

Good morning, Kathy... people are just so stinking impatient these days. I'm always saying, as they do in Austrilia: "give break, man."

Nina Hollander, Broker oh yes, people are more impatient and less tolerant. But..when something like this happens, you realize that we're all going through something.

Good morning Kathy. I have always been quick to make an exit from my car. A force of habit learned from my Dad. My wife, bless her heart, takes a bit longer. As we age, we are more considerate of others, but I consider it practicing patience. That said, not sure I am a good student. Just ask my wife. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I'm like you and exit quickly although the older I get, it takes a little longer getting out of our low-to -the ground Jag. I'm usually patient unless i'm not! LOL

I actually enjoy situations like that, as more often than not, there are apologies coming from both sides and a nice moment shared, as long as something disastrous doesn't happen first, haha.

Kathy Streib   we have all been there and most of it is generated by our own impatience. For whatever few seconds it may have been that the door was open, that person recognized the error and came over to right the hasty honk

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 I agree. It's It's easy to get distracted and forget others may be waiting on you.

Nice. I think (with the crazy political divisions in our country right now) folks are a little tight in the head. Everyone needs to breathe or maybe take a yoga class.

I took a situational awareness course once, and one of the things we learned was to get in your car, close and lock the door, start the car and take off. In other words, if the door is open it also gives someone a chance to rip you out of it, or harm you, or whatever. So the advice we received was to never have the phone in your hand - it should be in your pocket or bag. The key should be in your hand and that's pretty much it!

Nov 24, 2025 02:57 PM

Good course Kat Palmiotti I lock the door as soon as I get in, and I don't waste time getting out. And yes, put the phone in your pocket so your hands are free. That was a good course you took.

It was excellent Kathy Streib ! And if you pull up to a store and there are people hanging around outside, especially if they might be on something, don't go to the store. Nothing is worth potential danger.

Kathy, we all have been here with a door open.   Going to the store today, there was a store person gathering store orders, and a customer blocking the entire aisle.  OK, I was impatient, and they were both oblivious to anyone around them.

I have had much the same experiences when making a mistake while driving and wave to let the other driver know I was aware of the mistake.  As often as not have gotten a friendly wave back, not the single finger wave, letting me know they understand.  It is the people who act as though they can do no wrong that tends to get under our skin.  m
