MAKE SAFETY THE SECRET INGREDIENT THIS THANKSGIVING🦃

Your Essential Holiday Safety Guide

“Safety never takes a holiday.”
—Paul Blart

Who would argue that Thanksgiving is a time to gather, enjoy a great meal, and reflect on what we’re grateful for? But between the cooking, the crowds, and the travel, the holiday also brings its share of potential hazards. From kitchen mishaps and food safety issues to slips, falls, and travel dangers, keeping safety top of mind ensures your celebration stays joyful—and incident-free.

“Safety does not come with luck. It has to be prepared.”
—Author Unknown

Preparing a full Thanksgiving feast can mean complicated recipes, packed kitchens, and hours of cooking—all of which raise the risk of fires and injuries. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) notes that Thanksgiving leads the year in home cooking fires🔥, with four times more fire incidents than any other day. Stay protected by keeping a fire extinguisher🧯 nearby, staying present while cooking, and using timers ⏱️to prevent forgotten dishes.

Foodborne illness is another common holiday spoiler. Improperly handled turkey, stuffing, and sides can quickly become unsafe. Make sure to thaw your turkey🦃 correctly, cook it to at least 165°F (74°C), avoid cross-contamination, and follow the USDA’s food safety recommendations to keep your meal both delicious and safe.

The hustle and bustle of hosting can also introduce hazards⚠️ around the house. Slippery floors, misplaced décor,  cluttered walkways can lead to falls or injuries. Simple fixes—like securing rugs, clearing pathways, and placing candles and decorations out of high-traffic areas—can help protect guests and family. Each year, more than 36,000 people end up in emergency rooms from Thanksgiving-related accidents.

Travel adds its own set of risks. With roughly 30% of Americans planning to hit the road, the holiday weekend sees heavy traffic and unpredictable weather. Unfortunately, an estimated 507 fatalities and nearly 58,000 serious injuries occur annually during Thanksgiving travel. Safe driving 🛣️habits, routine vehicle🚗maintenance, and planning ahead for weather🌧️ delays can go a long way in ensuring a smooth trip.

As Benjamin Franklin wisely said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  It was true then—and it’s just as true today. Stay mindful, stay prepared, and enjoy a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... I've never personally experienced a Thanksgiving situation that led to a house fire or a trip to the emergency room... but if you look at the statistics, the mind boggles.

Good morning Nina. Although we should practice many of your tips daily, Thanksgiving gives ua an opportunity to review. And, it reminded me to get my fire extinguisher rectified. Thanks! Enjoy your day.

These are all good reminders on how to keep safe at Thanksgiving! I remember one year, my father-in-law hadn't been drinking water and he wound up in the hospital on Thanksgiving morning and we spent the entire day there. Geez.

While I've never had any type of accident during that time of year, you bring up many good points for every season.

Jeffrey Richman you are right, Jeff.  Then again, it seems that accidents happened more frequently during holidays so it's worth posting a reminder.

Nina Hollander, Broker - These are all great safety trips. I never had a fire during the holidays, but I am a home and hotel fire survivor many times in my lifetime.

A few years ago, I learned that one the real estate agents from my office had a house fire on Christmas morning. I rushed over to offer any help. They had six children who were very hungry and upset. The guy I knew from the business, asked me to take his wife and the kids to get them something to eat. I couldn't find anything open!

Patricia Feager somehow, Patricia, I think you've had more experiences with fires than just about anyone else I know. I just can't imagine.

Nina a local channel just had safety facts on TV this morning. One I hadn't thought about is a deep fryer. Mainly since we never use one for anything.  But our son does and they have kids running around.  The reporter suggested we treat fyers out in the backyard like we do our pools.   IF there are kids around there is a 'fryer monitor' to make sure the kids don't get near the fryer.   I thought that was a great idea.  We so used to making sure kids are safe around our pool - pets too for that matter.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I donated my deep fryer last year. It was a housewarming gift in 1998 and I realized in 2024 that I'd never once used it! I've gotten into the habit of air frying things.

Hi Nina- good safety tips! Larry is a stickler for not letting food sit out too long. And while we're getting everything ready for the table, the kids are not allowed in it.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I had a client who was a stickler for it, as well.  I'm less of a stickler and fortunately have never gotten ill from food left out... not that it's ever really out for that long (can't have the dog and cat going after it).
