Everyone knows that a big Thanksgiving meal is going to make you want to nap... here is why.
To understand why turkey may make you feel sleepy, consider these factors:
- Tryptophan Content: Turkey contains tryptophan, an amino acid that can promote sleepiness.
- High Protein Levels: The protein in turkey can lead to increased production of sleep-inducing hormones.
- Carbohydrate Pairing: Eating turkey with carbohydrates can enhance tryptophan's effects by increasing insulin levels.
- Post-Meal Fatigue: Large meals, especially during holidays, can cause drowsiness due to the body's energy focus on digestion.
- Circadian Rhythms: Eating at certain times can align with natural body rhythms, promoting sleepiness.
- Alcohol Consumption: Often paired with turkey meals, alcohol can also contribute to feelings of tiredness.

I had always heard of the chemical in turkey, Tryptophan, causing drowsiness but until I did my research for this post I was not aware of all the other factors involved. I can't blame Philemon for finding a place to take a nap, I'm sure I will do the same tomorrow but it will most likely be my bed.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
