Ride-Sharing Takes Flight: Uber Rolls Out Airborne Service

By
Industry Observer DRE# ER40011786

Uber and Joby Aviation have partnered and have created air taxis.

You will be able to book an air taxi through the Uber app, and the system will include a ground "Uber" ride to a vertiport, where you will then board the air taxi.

About the Aircraft - The EVTOL aircraft are designed to take off and land vertically like a helicopter and then transition to forward flight.  They are intended to be quieter, safer, and more energy-efficient than traditional helicopters.

Performance - These Joby air taxis are designed to carry up to four passengers, have a range of about 100 miles, and can travel at speeds of up to 200 mph.

Timeline - Joby aims to launch commercial operations in Dubai in 2026 and plans to expand to other cities such as New York and Los Angeles, with initial rides likely to start in 2026.

Cost - The initial price is expected to be similar to an Uber Black, with a long-term goal of reducing the price to be comparable to an Uber X.

This could seriously change the way we commute, but will it be for those only with lots of extra cash?

Hello Joan - my childhood memories of The Jetsons seem to be coming into reality.

Michael Jacobs I was thinking the same when I heard this.  We should have known someone in the future would come up with something similar.

Good Morning, Joan Cox  the air taxi will inevitably be a valid mode of transportation. I just hope they will have a driver 😁 and not be autonomous

I was think I read it would be autonomous.   THAT would be scary!

That's fascinating! The idea of air taxis for a 100-mile, 200 mph commute sounds like science fiction coming true. I agree—the cost and accessibility will be the real hurdle to watch. Hopefully, that Uber X pricing goal happens sooner rather than later!

Good morning Joan. If they can make the cost affordable enough, I can see great success in traffic jammed cities saving high priced executives significant time. Enjoy your day.

I think it would help the traffic issues at rush hours.

Good morning, Joan... I used to "commute" from my condo in Sausalito to the San Francisco airport back in the mid-70's via helicopter. It was a great way to get back and forth quickly. As for Uber... I shut down my account with them years ago... too much fraud that would take forever to correct. And actually they never corrected anything... it was American Express who kept refunding us. Whether Uber or Lyft, I'd have to know a whole lot more about their pilots before I got into one of these. I don't believe they do all that great a job vetting their drivers, so flying would be scary for me.

Nina Hollander, Broker I have never taken an Uber of Lyft, as we see so many reports on assaults on the passengers.

Joan Cox   my recollections are that the British were the first to have a VTAL plane, that had greater capabilities than our fighter planes and more range than a helicopter.

I still prefer the 4 wheels of an auto.

I would worry about it in NYC. So many airports and low flying objects already. Would be a fun flight from Kennedy Airport into the city (where would it land though???

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I was wondering if the FAA monitored these, or if anyone would be?   I could be scary.

Joan Cox - as I was reading your post, The Jetsons' came to mind! If Elon can make driverless cars come to fruition, it was just a matter of time Uber and Joby Aviation taxis would be flying in the sky!

We are living in an advanced technology revolution. I think Lew Corcoran would enjoy reading your blog post!

What a fascinating read, Joan Cox. Thanks for breaking down such a big shift in how we might travel! The details you shared make the idea of air taxis feel less like science fiction and more like something we’ll actually see soon 🙂. Grateful for the clear way you laid it out, it really sparks thought about where commuting could be headed.

Read about a GA business this morning that delivers to your local airport for $80 (within 250 miles of his business).  I thought that was really cool.
