The Power of Finishing: Why Completed Tasks Earn More Than Big Ideas

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Gwen Fowler Real Estate, Inc 10307

Real estate is full of big ideas. Big goals. Big plans. Big dreams that come with a brand-new planner every January. But here’s the truth I’ve learned over 38 years:  Big ideas don’t pay you. Finished work does.

We all know agents with brilliant ideas — the perfect marketing plan, the next social media strategy, the new system that will “change everything”… someday.

The problem? Nothing ever makes it out of the idea stage.

The Market Pays for Results — Not Potential

Ideas are exciting — but incomplete work earns exactly $0.

✔ Listings that go live
✔ Contracts that close
✔ Follow-ups that turn into showings
✔ Thank-you cards that turn into referrals
✔ Systems that remove chaos from your week

Every dollar in this business comes from completion, not planning.

Don’t Compare Your Work to Anyone Else’s

One of the biggest productivity killers in real estate is comparison.

We see someone else posting 5 closings this week…
We see a team with a bigger marketing budget…
We see polished videos and fancy open house spreads…

And suddenly, we start believing our results aren’t enough.

But here’s the truth:

Your business is not supposed to look like theirs.

Your goals, your market, your strengths, your clients — all unique.

Your value isn’t measured against someone else’s timeline.

Focus on the work that supports YOUR success.
The only comparison worth making is:

➡️ Are you finishing more today than you did last month?

Why We Don’t Finish

Agents often get stuck in one of these traps:

  • Overthinking — If it isn’t perfect, it doesn’t get done

  • Overplanning — The planning becomes the project

  • Overcommitting — Too many irons in the fire

  • Overcomparing — “They’re doing it better, why try?”

Comparison is the thief of completion.
Completion is the creator of income.

You Don’t Need Big — You Need Done

Here’s the magic:

  • One follow-up call can turn into one showing

  • One showing can turn into one contract

  • One contract can turn into commission

  • One commission can turn into confidence

Finished work stacks.
Finished work compounds.
Finished work earns.

The 80/20 of Finishing

20% of your tasks create 80% of your results.

Your job isn’t to do everything —
Your job is to finish what makes you money:

1️⃣ Lead follow-up
2️⃣ File completion
3️⃣ Keeping listings active and accurate
4️⃣ Outreach to past clients
5️⃣ Clear systems that keep deals moving

When you finish those first, your business grows.

Finishing Builds Confidence

Every task completed is a win.
Wins build momentum.
Momentum builds success.

You don’t need to chase confidence.
You build it — one finished task at a time.

My Challenge to You

Right now — pick one task you’ve left unfinished:

📌 A blog post sitting in drafts
📌 A buyer packet waiting to be mailed
📌 A client who needs a quick check-in
📌 A folder is missing one document

Finish it today.

Not because it’s perfect —
because it’s profitable.

Final Thought

Big ideas turn into real income only when you finish them.

Comparison slows you down.
Completion pushes you forward.

Real estate rewards the doers —
not the dreamers.

Finish what matters.
Finish what pays.
Your business will thank you.

Gwen, It’s such a great reminder that confidence really is earned through action, not just wishful thinking!

Goals are my failing.  Wishful thinking.  Chores--have to be done, and if something goes on the chore list, I will see progress.

Good morning, Gwen... I'm loving this series of posts. For me, the lifelong struggle has always been perfectionism and not letting it hinder me from starting and finishing something. It's been a journey to accept excellence versus perfection.

My grandparents always said to do something--even if it is wrong.  First things on my list are usually done wrong, but correcting them is shorter than a new plan.  Have a great day and thanks for the comment.

I think two main things slow down progress:
1) Paralysis by analysis: waiting for everything to be perfect before getting started.
2) Lack of persistence and consistency. A plan must be worked long enough for it to show results.

Progress is made when you can't have coffee until you have finished your first chore.

Gwen, LOVE this post, and so correct!   So many overplan, and then get NOTHING done.   Some make goals that could never be achieved, then quit.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - I wish I had you for my Broker when I got started in the business. You make good sense!

When I first started in real estate, my Broker was a kill-joy. I dreaded those so-called productivity parties — office meetings at fancy restaurants where they paraded comparison charts of agents’ success. I hated it. Because no matter how hard I worked, I could never compete with the Top Producers. And back then, before RESPA, the playing field wasn’t even level.

But here’s what I learned from you: it wasn’t about competing with them. It was about finishing my own work. Ideas didn’t close deals. Finished contracts did.

Thank you, Gwen. Past experiences that made me feel bummed never really disappeared.

Productivity meetings do not make anyone feel good. They are a thing of the past.  I take my agents out for pizza, and we argue over who can eat the hottest one and who can eat the most.  For my retirement, I am planning to take them all on a cruise.  Having staff that have been with you 1/2 your life is going to be like loosing family.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518   so many good reminders here of how to succeed and last in this business. Far too many agents fail to recognize as key to maintaining a flow of business.

For me it is information overload..., we are bombarded with so much information and so many ideas( especially now with AI ) ~ it feels almost impossible to focus on execution of one or few good ideas.

That is the plan, keep us busy with busy work and not doing the things that pay.  I work from a list I make the night before to avoid busywork.  Thanks for the comment.
