December 2025 Discoveries

I recently finished jury duty. Over the years, I have been "summoned" numerous times and served more than a few. However, I wasn't initially called to report until the year I received notification that I had passed my state real estate examination. Coincidental. Circumstantial. Or something else.

Maybe it's time for a recess. I digress. In and beyond that courtroom box where I spent time the last two weeks. Admittedly, I admit to being grateful this latest trial was relatively quick. Otherwise, more legal lingo might have been introduced as part of this post.

The process certainly provides another people-watching perspective. And so much more. My jury duty presence has been requested in various venues around Los Angeles County since that first appearance in 1993. The experience is a bit different each time.

And like real estate transactions, each case is unique. Different from what we may imagine, see or recall as familiar from a variety of sources. Of course, similarities exist. Once again, it's simply complicated. In light of this most recent deliberating experience, this quote comes to mind:

You are not learning anything when you are talking.

attributed to Lyndon Johnson

Good morning Michael. Living in Illinois after being admitted to the Bar, I was considered ineligible to serve on a jury. When I moved to Florida, no longer had that exemption but each time called was dismissed because of my background. And by the time we moved back to Illinois I was exempt due to age. Never got the chance. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - you raise an interesting point about background.  I have seen all sorts of things "thrown out" in the process.

Good Morning Michael Jacobs  My first call for jury duty was sent to me right after I got my draft notice in 1970. It was to sit on the Bobby Seal trial, Black Panthers in New Haven, CT and the courtroom was intimidating to say the least. I was released, reluctantly by the judge and at least 1 lawyer due to the issues it would have caused me as I was to be in the middle of finals when the trial started.

I have been called several times since but sent home each time and the most recent time was earlier this year and I got a dismissal due to my age. Seems our deep blue state doesn't have a large, qualified jury pool.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - wow - that would be an intimidating first-time jury duty experience.

Michael, this is a thoughtful and quietly insightful reflection. The parallels you draw between jury service and real estate are subtle but powerful — unique circumstances, incomplete information, human behavior, and the responsibility to listen carefully before forming conclusions.

That Lyndon Johnson quote is especially fitting. So much of both jury duty and real estate decision-making hinges on restraint, observation, and absorbing perspectives we might not initially expect. It’s a good reminder that clarity often comes from listening more than speaking.

Your post captures how everyday civic experiences can sharpen professional judgment in unexpected ways. A meaningful discovery, indeed.

Good Monday morning, Michael. Thanks for sharing this experience.

I have usually been dismissed from jury duty because I have a law degree.

Roy Kelley - I had long heard that was a dealbreaker of sorts for jury duty selection but have since heard stories to the contrary.

In Florida (is it the same in California?) we do not have to go after 70 years old, though it seems to me it might be fun once I am retired.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty - I always thought that was true as well in California.  After jury duty, a friend of mine told me a 90-year-old relative who is now non-verbal has been called.   Yikes.

Yes indeed Jury duty requires active listening.  I have been called and excused because the attorneys want someone less intelligent and less informed.

Hi Michael- oh yes, I have my share of jury duty experiences. Once, I misplaced my summon during finals in grad school. I thought for sure they were going to come for me and lock me up.

I was selected and served in downtown Houston. On my second day, the parking lot attendant lost the keys to my car. I had to try to track Larry down which was not easy because this was prior to cell phones. It was night and did I mention in downtown Houston. Anyway, I got my dad and finally got hold of Larry.

I don't mind jury duty if I didn"t have to hit downtown traffic at rush hour.

Kathy Streib - I can understand why the example you share in your comment was memorable.  Just mentioning that it occurred prior to cell phones, makes it unimaginable to some people for many reasons.

Michael Jacobs  I was wondering where you have been.  I dread being called for Jury Duty because I would have to drive in rush-hour traffic, not to mention parking nightmares, or take the dreaded public transportation.

Hannah Williams - jury duty didn't time away from me.  My commitment to participating in this community continues to evolve.  The judge in this most recent case was quite mindful of our time.  It seemed like a well-run approach.

Michael, UGH, jury duty.   Lucky you!   Two weeks is a fairly short duty, thankfully.   I have been called several times, but haven't got all the way to actually sitting in on one.

Joan Cox - I exaggerated a bit --- it was actually one day for selection, five days of testimony and two for instructions/deliberations/wrapping up the case.  So, eight days total.  I'm definitely not a jury duty expert and don't want to be.

Your reflections bring the courtroom experience to life in such a relatable way, Michael Jacobs, and the parallels you drew with real estate felt spot on 🙂. Thanks for sharing these insights that remind us how every encounter, whether in service or in business, carries its own lessons!

Michael Jacobs - I always consider serving on Jury Duty to be an honor. I was called to serve in Chicago; however, I had a valid excuse.

I was called for jury duty in Texas and served. It was quite a learning experience. In the court room your only job is to listen - really listen. Someone's life may be at risk. In that case, which lasted several days, the person was sent to Prison.

I've been contacted by Flower Mound several months ago, just for an opinion - Did I want to serve on jury duty? I said yes. But I haven't been called.

I hope your experience was very positive.

Patricia Feager - you're right, it's an interesting experience. While this most recent trial wasn't a criminal proceeding, results do matter and can make significant differences.  Mindfulness of such decisions are important.

Michael Jacobs - I would love to serve again. Did you ever watch the movie "12 Angry Men," starring Henry Fonda? I've watched it several times and each time, I learned something different.

Not only does the person serving jury duty, get to know the other people in the room, you quickly pick up who rises on their own to a leadership position, and who just wants to get it over ASAP.

I was also intrigued by interactions between the Prosecutor and the Defense. I would never want that job. What did you think?

Dec 16, 2025 08:44 AM
Michael Jacobs

Patricia Feager - yes, I recall the movie but not the details.   Whenever people are involved, there seems to be much to observe and listen to in addition to other sensory insights.  I ponder many sorts of things; I believe the words of wisdom from LBJ may have entered my mind during deliberations.

I hope I don't jinx myself by saying I've only been on Jury Duty once and it was a very long time ago. It was not a horrible experience but it was far more boring than I ever expected. Much more tedious than it appears on tv and in movies. LOL

Patricia Feager - 56-degree weather doesn't seem to be so cold to me, but I can understand how some may call it freezing or bordering on bittering.  I experienced that in my first trip to Chicago in the winter of 1982 - talk about chilly - oh my!  I remain grateful the temps in my area rarely drift into uncomfortable levels.

Hi Michael. Jury duty can be compared to real estate as each case is certainly different. It's been years since I have served since, they stopped calling after I reach 70 years old. The last time I remember serving it was a in Juvenile court for a child abuse case. It was difficult hearing the testimony of the defendant who was abused by an adult. Yet, it was an experience I have never forgotten.

Michael, I am thinking after I move I won't get any summons for jury duty?   I won't be a Portuguese resident, so not there either.   Heaven!

Joan Cox - your comment prompts a question, are you planning to maintain some form of presence here once you leave.  I think you are leasing your house, but I wonder if there is going to be an address or phone number that continues to keep you "grounded" stateside.  No need to reply especially because of privacy concerns.

I will need to let my friends and clients know - so no big deal.   I am selling my house in the next couple of months, and renting in Portugal.   I will have a PO address for the real estate commission and any mail.   The phone number still not sure about, but working on figuring out porting my number to a Google one, and hoping I can keep my number.
