Signed, Stamped, Sealed, Sent: It’s National Christmas Card Day!

NATIONAL CHRISTMAS CARD DAY: DECEMBER 9TH

PAPER GREETINGS IN A DIGITAL WORLD... DO PEOPLE STILL SEND CHRISTMAS CARDS?

"Christmas cards are tiny ambassadors of love, sent to remind us we’re not alone during the holidays."

Do you still send Christmas cards? 📬 In today’s digital age—with e-cards, social media, and instant messaging—the tradition of writing and mailing Christmas cards has certainly changed. According to recent polls, 6 in 10 Americans report receiving fewer cards. Clearly, fewer people mail traditional cards these days, but I still do. And a survey two years ago of 2,000 US adults, split evenly by generation, found two in three people prefer to receive physical cards as opposed to digital ones.

Call me old-fashioned, but I love❤️ sending cards: Christmas cards, birthday cards, home and wedding anniversary cards, graduation cards, Mother’s and Father’s Day cards, Thanksgiving cards, thank-you cards—you name it. I’ll even admit that browsing for the perfect card(s) is one of my favorite things to do. Finding just the right message in a card for someone feels as special to me as choosing the perfect gift.

"Each Christmas card is a little piece of joy, connecting hearts across the miles."

What I’ve noticed over the years is how much people appreciate receiving cards in the mail. Because they’re less common these days, they do feel more meaningful. A handwritten card carries a thoughtfulness that a quick text or online greeting just doesn’t. Sending a card lets someone know I took a moment to think about them—and when I receive one, it warms my heart that someone took the time to think of me.

"A mailbox filled with Christmas cards is a mailbox filled with happiness."

I also love receiving "real" cards. My family and friends know how much I love getting a card and don't really care about a text or Facebook greeting. Every holiday season I love catching up on news from my friends and clients in their Christmas cards. I've already begun to receive holiday cards from clients and friends and I'm loving hearing all about their year and plans for 2026. There’s something magical about opening a Christmas card and feeling the sender’s warmth.

Have you ever wondered how the tradition of sending Christmas cards came about? Find out in the video below.

So what do you say? Do you still send Christmas cards? Are you planning to send Christmas cards this year?

Hello Nina - ah, methods of communication go beyond seasonality.   I might "miss" such days, but they are reminders.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... there's just something special about finding a card in the mail box, opening it and seeing a message from a friend or relative.

I don't mail out Christmas cards, but I do mail out an annual fridge calendar to all of my clients, family, and friends.  I usually mail it out after Thanksgiving.

Brian England that's a bit much... I don't do that!

Brian England good morning, Brian... that would feel too commercial for me. And I hate receiving what feels like a business communication from someone I know well in lieu of a holiday greeting. I send out Christmas cards to friends, relatives, and all my past clients and special current clients. Then the day after Christmas I send out my fridge calendars that say Happy New Year. It's more work, but I find people appreciate the communication.

Hmm, I totally get that Nina Hollander, Broker and I often feel the same way about those types of things, but people have often told me that they look forward to receiving it annually, and it seems genuine when they say it.  It always has an updated photo of me, so perhaps that personalizes it a bit, haha.

Brian England people always thank me for the calendars... but I would feel like I was missing a personal connection if I didn't also send out a card.

One year, I wrote a personal note along with each and every one Nina Hollander, Broker that was a lot of work, though, haha.

Until this year I have always sent Christmas Cards. I would write them out on Thanksgiving weekend, and mail them around 12-1. However, I realized at the start of this season that it was feeling like a chore to me, instead of something enjoyable, so I decided I would just send cards if I received them. Maybe next year I'll get back to being more proactive!

Kat Palmiotti good morning, Kat... I do a short letter that I include in all my cards so my writing is minimal. And yes, it is a bit of a chore, but I do like to remember "special" people and clients in my life this way... and I love when they remember me.

Hi Roy... we certainly send and receive fewer cards as the years go on... but that's mostly because so many of our friends and family have passed.

Good morning Nina. Up at until a few years ago our mailbox was full In the month of December. These days not so much and the number of cards are few. And, this year we have joined those who no longer send cards. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin hi Wayne... not there yet... and might not ever be even if the number of cards we send out personally are much fewer than in the past.

Nina Hollander, Broker two peas in a pod. I remember going to the Foley's downtown store in Houston the day after Christmas. My aunt, mother and a few cousins all went and we'd buy half off Christmas cards and wrapping paper.

I mail Christmas cards or Thanksgiving Cards.  My winning card is the Valentine's.  So many of my clients are alone now, and the Valentine speaks volumes about how much we care — even if you are no longer in the buying pool.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 hi Gwen... I actually do both... Christmas and Thanksgiving. I used to be able to send fridge magnet notepads with a Valentine theme... but haven't been able to lay my hands on those for a few years. Will need to think of something else.

Joan Cox most of my friends and relatives I send cards to are not in Charlotte. As for favorite clients... I'd be doing that until June if I was meeting them. I've found most people are just too busy in December to go have coffee or lunch with me.

I have a confession, Nina. I used to send out cards, but like Kat Palmiotti said...it became too much of a chore for me. I still love picking out other occasion cards. My friend's 106 year old mother tells her friends not to get her cards because they cost too much and she'l just toss them.
