Last week I mentioned that after a tree fell down in our yard, there were multiple directions I could have taken for my weekly post. It's not uncommon to have choices, so how do you decide what to blog about?
Your methodology may vary, but here's a glimpse into my mental process.
First, what ideas do I have worth the time? Figuring 20-30 minutes per post, sometimes more, is there a good potential return? Will the output be the equivalent of newspaper on the bottom of a bird cage, or something that will produce good results for a long time?
Who's the audience? Consumer? Other Rainers? Of those pools, how many people in the targeted group would care enough to click? A small audience can be fine, especially for long tail evergreen posts that can make your phone ring for years. And the counterpart, will people you do NOT want to read your post find it?
What's the purpose of my blog? For the last few years in the Rain, it's strictly Ask An Ambassador posts. Prior to that, consumers were my primary target. Those are vastly different audiences. Now? The purpose is to help other Rainers with their blogging, hoping tips here can help someone avoid a mistake, shorten the learning curve, help gain business, etc. With that in mind, I'm not going to come here and write about the Christmas parade, my favorite restaurant, new construction patio homes, or other topics that might make my phone ring.
What's the risk? What do you mean RISK? There are more than enough stories about agents getting fired from their office for blog posts, Facebook posts, tweets, or some other use of social media. As many have said, freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequence.
And of course, what do you FEEL like posting? Sometimes you can have a great idea, but just can't get the vibe you want because your head and heart just aren't in the right place at the moment for the topic. Stash it back in DRAFT and move on to another idea.
Is the idea time sensitive? Some topics you need to get out early, some have expiration dates, and other ideas can work for years.
The above filters help guide me each time I have the keyboard in front of me.
What helps you decide what to post?
Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,
Bill & Liz aka BLiz
