Ask An Ambassador: How Do You Choose?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

Last week I mentioned that after a tree fell down in our yard, there were multiple directions I could have taken for my weekly post.  It's not uncommon to have choices, so how do you decide what to blog about?

Your methodology may vary, but here's a glimpse into my mental process.

First, what ideas do I have worth the time?  Figuring 20-30 minutes per post, sometimes more, is there a good potential return?  Will the output be the equivalent of newspaper on the bottom of a bird cage, or something that will produce good results for a long time?

Who's the audience?  Consumer?  Other Rainers?  Of those pools, how many people in the targeted group would care enough to click?  A small audience can be fine, especially for long tail evergreen posts that can make your phone ring for years.  And the counterpart, will people you do NOT want to read your post find it?

What's the purpose of my blog?  For the last few years in the Rain, it's strictly Ask An Ambassador posts.  Prior to that, consumers were my primary target.  Those are vastly different audiences.  Now?  The purpose is to help other Rainers with their blogging, hoping tips here can help someone avoid a mistake, shorten the learning curve, help gain business, etc.  With that in mind, I'm not going to come here and write about the Christmas parade, my favorite restaurant, new construction patio homes, or other topics that might make my phone ring.

What's the risk?  What do you mean RISK?  There are more than enough stories about agents getting fired from their office for blog posts, Facebook posts, tweets, or some other use of social media.  As many have said, freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequence.

And of course, what do you FEEL like posting?  Sometimes you can have a great idea, but just can't get the vibe you want because your head and heart just aren't in the right place at the moment for the topic.  Stash it back in DRAFT and move on to another idea.

Is the idea time sensitive?  Some topics you need to get out early, some have expiration dates, and other ideas can work for years.

The above filters help guide me each time I have the keyboard in front of me.
What helps you decide what to post?

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Good morning Bill. Some years ago in an attempt to post quickly I posted some trivia questions. It became a niche and has its loyal followers, many still active but more that have moved on. These days I stay in my lane and seldom swerve. It just works for me. Enjoy your day.

Wayne, the joys of being retired, you can pick any topic and go with it.  You've found one way of getting regular attention, and that's a win.

This is a really good question. I am not sure what motivates me to write a post or come up with an idea. hmmmm

I find some ideas spark pretty hard, just demanding to be written, others are more of a mechanical function (e.g. I KNOW I need to write long tail search pages, maybe not fun, but serve a solid business generation purpose).

That gives a personal side to how you work and think, and I find those type of posts useful for building our referral network.  There's insight there I can't gain from business directories.

Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals. - Wenatchee, WA
Author, Golfer, Retired Broker, Wenatchee, WA

Hi Bill,
My blogging purpose has changed. I don't have any expectation, other than staying connected with other professionals.

When I was more actively working, I blogged (on my outside blog) about the Wenatchee area and other things that were pertinent at the time. Daily blogging was easy.

After I retired, I went to a daily theme (on AR) that I tied into real estate or life in general. I found it much easier than randomly coming up with ideas. Now I've settled into a couple of series posts a week: the Second Chance Saturday, and (currently) the presidential series. When the presidential series is done, I'll come up with another series idea that will keep me going for a few weeks or months.  And, of course, I often participate in Challenge posts.

When I was blogging daily, routines and series of posts helped me keep chugging along.  Certain days were market reports, so at the beginning of the month I didn't have to look for ideas since I already had a schedule.

I love the way you broke this down into practical filters we can all apply before we hit “publish.” That balance between audience, purpose, and potential consequences is something I’m learning to consider more intentionally.

I especially appreciate your point about “risk” — great reminder that just because we can write about something doesn’t always mean we should. And the idea of drafting a post and coming back when the heart and head align? That’s gold.

Thank you for sharing the thought process behind the scenes. It helps newer bloggers like me stay focused on creating content that has long-term value — and avoids those birdcage moments!

Gwen, I've found myself with some posts just struggling.  The tone isn't there, or it may come across as more negative than intended.   And IMO, some cans of worms just need to stay closed, so things go into the Draft folder, and most likely will never come out, but they're still there if I want to make another attempt.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - an interesting question and a blog topic that can challenge. On occasion or on a regular basis.

Some posts are more challenging than others, but most weeks I'm now writing my AAA posts Monday and using the autoscheduler.   That's progress over my older AAA posts where it would happen day of and I might be looking for an idea vs. having one already in mind.

Because I have so many green posts that still make the phone ring, my client facing posts are now those that generally promote something that where a search will give locals or newbies the answer without calling me. (where to rent a boat, who are the plumbers that show up... that kind of thing) or to promote a specific property.

Liz and Bill Spear - When I was active in the business, my target audience were clients and people outside of AR who read my blog posts. Now that I am inactive, I try my best to have a purpose for what I write that may be of interest to other real estate agents or members on ActiveRain. In my last post I announced the World Cup 2026 in Dallas and the schedule. It is a post that I hope will generate high interest to many people.

The title of your post and your featured photo bring a non-real estate-related issue to mind for me, although it could also be a real estate-related issue, haha.  How to choose which light bulbs to have in a home?  In the past, it was said to have LED's because they lower energy costs, but now I am learning that LED's are actually detrimental to our health, haha.

Good morning Bill,

You have nailed it once again with filters that should help guide us each time we write a post. Motivation is a key factor when choosing why you want to post and what your reason is for taking the time..business, staying top of mins, staying relevant, establishing relationships!

Even as an engineer, sometimes feelings influence what I do or don't write.  I generally try to avoid rant style posts, so if I feel it heading in that direction I may just kick it to the curb and move on to another idea.

Liz and Bill Spear Sometimes a thought comes to me that I think will be an interesting topic for Active Rain. Market reports that many believe are boring are always something I try to post, as I think they are vital information. Local information, anything of interest to our Active Rain community and the Public, in answer to your question. Great post Bill

I remember you once mentioned "willy-nilly posting," and that's precisely what I do. My ideas come from my clients, phone calls, and thoughts on enhancing my listings. I also look for interesting content for my weekly show. Reading posts and comments often inspires new ideas for me, along with insights gained from our weekly Zoom meetings, contests, and posts like yours! While I don't plan ahead, I do keep posts in draft and never run short of ideas.

This month, I've decided to challenge myself by posting every day. So far, so good, but it's only the 10th!

Dec 10, 2025 08:29 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Ideas to the left of me, ideas to the right of me, ideas behind us and in front of us, pick the will and the nill and add in the y and off we go :)

And I know you can do it daily if you choose, and it makes sense.  On my marathon posting streak, some days it was more chore than fun.  It made sense for me then, now, daily posting just isn't at the top of my have to do items.  It still matters, and matters a LOT on Tuesdays :)

Hi Bill- when I started blogging it was to put myself out there and to put the idea of home staging out there. I wrote about staging and began including posts about local events and places.

Now that I'm retired I write every day because of commitment I made to myself and I want to see if I can do it. I try to write something that would be of interest to someone else. And, I write to keep the old dndrites fires up.

I've enjoyed blogging because it does bring a change of pace vs. my normal engineering work.  Keeps a different part of the brain active.
