Skating Away

This is more of a PSA then a blog post because it is SUPER DANGEROUS to be out on the street in Minot ND today.

Last night and this morning the surface temperature as about 20 degrees. However up in the sky it was much warmer. It rained all night. When rain hits a frozen surface it's very dangerous. No matter what you drive, unless it has chains around the tires, you are NOT going to stop. It's also not safe to walk thus school has been called off today for all Minot Public Schools.

This scenario reminds me of Jethro Tull's "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day".

The rain is supposed to be on and off all day with an accumulation of 1/2" of ice on the ground. This is also a recipe for trees and powerlines to come down. Be safe, don't get near a downed powerline.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

Attention Minot residents! Ensuring the safety of ice is crucial. In my area, we contact the Fisheries and Wildlife Department to check local ponds and lakes.  Is there an authority that does the same in ND?

I had not thought of that Kelly McGovern but ND is a State that relies on the Sportsmans' dollars so I would guess that there is. I know of a large State hatchery just 50 miles South of us so I hope they are on top of this ice storm.

Oh wow, Bob. And here I was complaining it's only 37 degrees today... but we are not having snow, ice, or rain. You stay safe and warm and with your bones probably you should stay at home.

Thank you Nina Hollander, Broker . I did get out a little bit but I made sure to wear my cleats and walk like an old man (slow and steady). 😊

Bob "RealMan" Timm people with 4-wheel drive vehicles may get going fine on ice, BUT 4-wheel drive vehicles still do stop any better on ice than non 4-wheel drive cars.

That is EXACTLY right George Souto . All to often young men and women from the Minot Air Force Base don't learn until they have made one or more trips into the ditch.

It is very dangerous and unpredictable Abby Stiller . At the airport yesterday a truck sanding the runways lost control and took the nose off an airplane... really!

I am glad that I am not in Minot right now, that definitely sounds way too cold for me, and I wouldn't want to slip on some ice and fall on my butt, haha.

Up here we don't consider it cold until the temp dips below zero Brian England and then it's not really cold until it hits 20 below zero.

Falling on the ice is a real problem. When people slip they tend to put their hands out to break their fall and they usually end up with broken wrists because of it. Two years ago I landed on my shoulder and the damage was bad enough I had to have my shoulder replaced (I'm still recovering from that).

Yes indeed, rain in the winter is definitely dangerous. (And our Winter starts around Thanksgiving, so it's officially winter here) - and it has been warm and rainy and then icy. I'm hoping today is much better when I head out, but we'll see.

It's improved here today over yesterday Kat Palmiotti even though we received a new dusting of snow overnight. It looks like the weekend forecast is for extreme cold. Oh boy 😜.

Thanks for sharing this timely warning, Bob "RealMan" Timm. The vivid detail makes the danger feel real and urgent. Your post is a clear reminder to stay cautious and it’s a gift to have that awareness shared 🙂.

You are welcome Lew Corcoran. There is real danger in an ice storm whether  you are walking or driving. Older folks on plavix risk a brain bleed if they slip and land on their head.
