Friday Fun…Christmas Cards and Other Traditions

Nina Hollander, Broker  wrote a post on National Christmas Card Day. It’s interesting, and she includes a video of how the tradition of sending Christmas cards came about.

It made me think about the traditions and fun things we carry with us through the years. Some stay with us, some morph, and some disappear.

For example, I used to send out Christmas cards.  But as Kat Palmiotti said in her comment, it became too much of a chore for me. That said, I do appreciate those cards I receive, especially my cousin’s. Her husband is a professional photographer, and every year we receive the cutest Christmas card with a staged family photo.

What about other Christmas traditions we have and continue, or have stopped?

One of our favorite traditions is taking one night to drive around looking at Christmas lights. When we were in FL, we’d go with our good friends or take their daughters with us and give their parents a night off!  We’d always have a thermos of hot chocolate.

Some traditions we left behind in Delray Beach, such as attending the annual Christmas Parade and visiting the 100-foot-high Christmas tree.

A tradition we brought with us from FL was Santa. He makes an appearance on Christmas Day at Casa Streib. In FL, Santa came by on Christmas Eve when we were out at dinner, or once at our home.

So, for some Friday Fun…do you still (if you ever did) send out Christmas cards to friends and family (not business)?

What Christmas traditions do you still have?

What have you thrown out the door?3

Good morning, Kathy. As you know, I continue to send Christmas cards to family, friends, and yes, clients. I always have at least one full size decorated tree. We still open Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve.

I've never been a "we have to do things the way we've always done them" so I don't have too many traditions, per se. I make Christmas cookies, but only when/if I'm in the mood. I might make them on 5 different days during the season, or just one. It depends. We do always get a Christmas tree (a live one) but when it happens all depends on life. This year I'm throwing a neighborhood party on the 20th so it has to happen before then. But it hasn't happened yet! And on and on..

Good morning Kathy. First and foremost as long as my wife draws breath the house is decorated until it looks like a Christmas decoration boutique. That will not change. As for sending Christmas cards, that tradition left the building a few year ago. Christmas morning breakfast, and it includes Belgium Waffles made by yours truly, continues. The only meal of the year I do myself. Enjoy your day.

Good Friday morning, Kathy. We do not send or receive as many Christmas cards like the many years in the past.

Social media and email messages have replaced most of the cards.

Good morning Kathy,

Its funny when you think of Christmas traditions, I use to send out lots of cards but keep it more to family and close friends now. Decorating the house and getting up the tree always happens and the earlier the better! Christmas eve going to church early and Christmas evening at one of my kids house for tamales, con queso, beans and rice is usually what we have along with a white elephant exchange (I already have my gift)! Driving around looking at the colorful lights is always a tradition! We open Christmas gifts on Christmas day and usually have Christmas dinner at one of my kids house now.

I always loved driving around doing Christmas Lights. When I was growing up, I always looked forward to seeing all my cousins. We had so many.

Hello Kathy, I write a Christmas letter every year to include in our Christmas card and I know my aunts and uncle look forward to the letter.  My one aunt that past away last year that I visited a month before she past show me a box of everyone of the letters that I mailed at Christmas and she said she weeks one every week for years.

Will Hamm How sweet that your aunt saved all those letters. I'm so glad you found out how much they meant to her before she died.

Our favorite time of year is Christmas and it shows!  We're all decorated in and out and enjoying beautiful music and good food with friends and family.  Albeit this year I'm taking it easier than most because Santa told me too!  Santa is my Chiro HO HO HO!

Kathy, I haven't sent out many cards over the last few years.   I try to hibernate for the month of December.  My sister was killed on Christmas Day years ago, and still have troubles.   I do send cards back to the ones who send me cards.

Kathy Streib  I don't send as many cards as I used to...only send out ten cards.

I create my Christmas card using the picture I make for my Wordless Wednesday just before Christmas. I have eleven printed so I can keep one for myself...which I frame and place on the bookcase next to my tree.

For as long as I can remember my family has celebrated on Christmas Eve...at my parents' home, until they moved to Florida, at which time my mom's sister took over for several years and then I took over. Currently it is my oldest daughter who hosts our Christmas Eve.

Christmas Day our children celebrate with the in-laws and we have a peaceful, relaxing day home alone, usually making something yummy for dinner and watching Christmas movies.

Kathy Streib   just today my wife asked me to update and print the labels so she can send out the close cards. The past couple of years have been tough on our world.

Hmm, I can't think of any traditions that I carry forward myself, but I know how much I enjoy receiving Christmas cards in the mail; I make an effort to send out something each and every year, haha.
