Being a professional Realtor® means your calendar is rarely your own. Days fill up fast with appointments, showings, inspections, settlements, family commitments, and those rare moments you protect like they're gold. We all learn pretty quickly how to juggle priorities and keep things moving.
What still surprises me, though, is how much information some people feel compelled to share when they’re unavailable.
Trying to reach an agent about a closing challenge via email, text, and phone; the call was answered, and the response was: "This is not a good time, I’m getting a pedicure."
Another was, “I’m at a medical appointment and won’t be feeling great afterward.”
Helpful? Not really. Necessary? Absolutely not.

Here’s the thing: being unavailable does not require a backstory. You don’t owe anyone a window into your personal life just because your calendar is full.
Here are a few recommended professional responses short, clear, and perfectly polite:
- That time doesn’t work for me; would later today or tomorrow be better?
- I’m booked then. How about 2:00, or would 3:00 be better?
- I have appointments stacked that morning. Let’s find a time in the afternoon.
- In a meeting, may I get back with you in an hour, or state a specific time.
Guard your time but be responsible how you can answer or have coverage.
And if you want the best response or the gold standard:
“I’m in an appointment.”

That’s it. No details. No explanations. No mental images anyone asked for.
Save the personal updates for friends who care and conversations that matter. In real estate, clarity and professionalism go a long way, and silence about why you’re busy is often the most professional answer of all.
