A Pine Tree & the Gift of Hope - True Story

Pine trees in winter are so beautiful. Don't you just love how they retain their green needles when everything else goes dormant? The trees hardiness denotes strength and courage when wind gusts are strongest. Did you know that the Pine Tree is symbolic of long life, immortality, courage, and strength in adversity?

When it comes to winter, there is nothing more beautiful to me than fresh covered snow on top of Pine Trees. I think it's what I miss most in North Texas.

A True Christmas Tree Story

This is the story of my greatest achievement with Pine Trees. The first house I bought in Northern, IL had an acre of land. Every year I planted at least one tree, new plants, flowers, or a bush.

One day I bought something from the Hardware Store and was given three free pine trees. They were about 3 inches tall. After planting the trees, two of them got run over by the riding lawn mower. One tree survived. To protect my tree, I built a protective barrier around it.  As the years went by, and Christmas was near, it got tall enough to be about my height. But that following summer, I noticed the crown on the top of the tree was cut off. I was devastated. The little boy next door came over to tell me he cut the top off and didn't know why. All I could do was cry. For a few Christmas holidays, I noticed the tree did not grow, but it kept its green needles. Then, one day on Christmas Eve, I saw my tree had two crowns! Then, the tree took off like a rocket with a double headed crown!

The tree grew so big, it was taller than my house! In fact, it was the biggest Christmas Tree in the whole subdivision. It was the only one with a double crown! When I moved, I did not miss my house, but I did weep to leave my tree behind. In time, I came to realize, I didn't just plant a Christmas tree, I planted seeds of faith and hope for my family's future which was essentially what we needed. Ironically, when it came time to sell and move to Texas, it was the Christmas Tree that the new buyers fell in love with and decided to buy.

Good evening Patricia,

OMG! I'm surprised the little boy came and told you but at least he fessed up and you learned what happened! Lovely story and someone is enjoying that wonderful tree!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - I was always fond of this tree. Trees can be sentimental and valuable!

The little boy was the kid who played with my son. We were like families living next door to each other.

Thank you for sharing it is a "Lovely story!"

Hi Patricia- I wonder if the boy's mother did the parenting thing and had him confess to you. I was looking at some of our pine trees this morning on our walk!!!

Kathy Streib - The next-door neighbors were like family. I knew the boy since his family moved into their house. Carol and her husband were always respected like an extension of my family and by my kids and vice versa.

Your comment touched my heart. I appreciate that you shared your thoughts.

How exciting for you to wake up to snow covered pine tree branches! I just loved seeing the first snow covered pine trees. They seem to exude peace and beauty!

Hello Patricia - at times, growth survives and thrives in numerous ways even when damage and/or harm occurs.

Michael Jacobs - When the incident occurred, I talked to the owner of a local nursery. I was told the crown is the most important part of the Pine Tree. When cut, it will either go dormant for a few years and grow back or eventually die. I was told to be patient. If the needles stayed green, that would be a good sign.

Hmm, that is interesting that the boy confessed but didn't know why he did what he did, haha.

Good morning, Patricia... I'm a fan of seeing green trees year-round. My first two homes in Charlotte were on large lots and I planted up lots of Leland Cypresses and Holly trees. My current lot is small, so I stick with a Nelly Stevens Holly and a Dwarf Magnolia.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Evergreens are the gift we get regardless of the weather. Small lots do need the smaller trees appropriate in size to the land and property where they are planted. The Nelly Stevens Holly in about a 7-gallon container works well. I like that you added a Dwarf Magnolia. Your lot must look beautiful!

I've seen homes with full size Magnolia Trees on smaller lots in some local neighborhoods in Flower Mound. They were disproportioned and way too big!

Patricia Feager the builder had planted a regular magnolia too close to my house... I had to take it down... the roots would have impacted my foundation at some point and the height was impacting parts of my roof.

Nina Hollander, Broker - the biggest mistake builders and homemakers make is planting trees too close to the foundation of a home or sidewalk. It costs the owner so much to undo the mistake.

Brian England - I didn't think it was funny. I did not need to conduct an investigation.

We were good neighbors. The point of this story wasn't to solve a mystery. It was about the growth and meaning of the Pine Tree

Kat Palmiotti - There is a time to plant, a time to buy, a time to care and be kind, and a time to let go.

I am thankful you showed me your property while you were in the beginning stages of construction. I do remember the lovely trees with their branches that seemed to embrace the space around where you were building. You were always smiling. However, on that day you showed me your land and the trees you wore the biggest and most radiant smile. I knew you loved what you and Anthony were building.

George Souto - I'm happy to hear you had a chance to enjoy some winter beauty on your pine trees on Sunday, December 14. Yesterday was my daughter's birthday. I was thankful I got to see her on FaceTime and share time with her for the time we had. She loves the snow even more than me!

I hope you have a good winter season, not too cold, not to uncomfortable - just right.
