Making Time For Me

By
Real Estate Agent with Dirt Road Real Estate SA676002000

Last January (2025) I went to a national franchise craft store and purchased paints, brushes and canvases to do some personal painting. Another craft store was going out of business; I then purchased many skeins of embroidery thread to complete my collection as I enjoy doing counted cross stitch. Now almost 12 months later, no paintings have been created and a few counted cross stitch projects have been completed or are a work in progress.

In November of this year, I reflected on my inability in making time for me.  Probably because I have been in sales for over five (5) decades and always lived by ‘time is of the essence.”  Calls, texts and emails have always been answered immediately or withing 12-24 hours.  Any requests from those communications again are answered promptly.

This reflection was the result of not being well for three months. Even though the illness prevented me from engaging in any “hobbies” or making time for me, I was living the expression the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” I had good intentions to paint and to complete stitching projects, but that did not happen.

Also my husband pointed out that I was working too much.  Of course, he knows me as I have a history of being a “workaholic.”

From the conversation with my husband and reflecting upon my good intentions, I then decided to not work on Sundays.  Also, I am attempting to limit my real estate activities on Saturday except for catching up on paperwork.

Fridays if I have no appointments are devoted to housework e.g. washing clothes and real estate paperwork. Saturday mornings are for catching up on any commitments while Saturday afternoons are for errands and having lunch with friends.

So far, not working on Sundays and scaling back Saturdays is working. My husband and I go out for breakfast each Sunday and then return home.  As we have had a guest for the last 3 months, I just started making time for me.

"All we have to do decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

J.R.R.Tolkien

My decision is to improve my consistency of this making time for me behavior in 2026. And I believe I will be a better person for this decision.

This is my second entry into the December Challenge sponsored by Lew Corcoran and Patricia Feager

Leanne Smith - I get it! I spent so many years doing things for others; I rarely had time for me. And when I tried to paint on canvas, I was my own worst critic. Time waits for no one. In the real estate world, real estate agents have the toughest time to realize, when it comes to their own life, they cannot stop the passing of time, and therefore, they should not delay something they feel passionate about.

Discovering what you need to give you more free time is a worthwhile endeavor. I know you will continue to succeed in business and have the time you need to have quality time for you and your husband.

Thank you for another great entry. Don't forget to add a graphic somewhere within the content of your great story. I wish you the best in 2026.

As in any aspect of life, enjoy the moment.  Self criticism when we are enjoying the moment, ruins the moment. I know because I have always been self critical and I am learning to let things go and let things be.

Leanne Smith - you are not alone. Long before I came to TX, I spent a lot of time when I was alone playing the piano. When I started playing Boogie Woogie music, after spending several years playing Classical Music and Christmas music, I quit. I didn't think I was good enough.

Years went by and I found a cassette I made of myself playing the piano. I couldn't believe how good I was and wondered why I thought I wasn't good? So, I sat down, and played the piano, only to discover, I couldn't play as well as I used to! Then I realized, the only one who told me I could not play well was ME!

Leanne, you definitely have to make time for yourself, or burn-out is imminent.   You will enjoy real estate much more when it is not 24-7.

Burnout has never been my problem in all of my years in sales. For me this is about making and then relishing the free time. Thank you and good morning from Sunny, no snow, AZ.

Hi Leanne- I'm happy to hear that you're taking time to do what you enjoy. Most people in sales feel as if they have to work when they're not sleeping or eating. You save up that "me time" for what???  How about showing us one of your paintings when you're done??

Well that sounds like a plan, though not today. I have made plans to meet a friend at a meat raffle sponsored by the local American Legion Post here in Golden Valley. Before that husband and I are going out for breakfast.

Good morning, Leanne. I totally get it. My first broker 30+ years ago told me to start making time for me so that I didn't burn out. I've been pretty good about doing that even if I do work a lot. And these days if I'm "not feeling it" if there's nothing I have to do that moment or day, I give myself grace and just do something for myself.

Good for you learning that lesson early.  Thank you for sharing your experience about "making time."  And a very good morning to you as well.

This is an excellent message. We need to schedule time with ourselves on the calendar, and if someone wants us to do something else, we can truthfully say, "I'm sorry but I already have an appointment - what about (this day/time)"

Thank you and I appreciate how you shared how one can be proactive instead of just reactive with "No."

Leanne Smith the first step is boundaries.  You have succeeded gf!  I always work by appointment and attempt to accommodate if necessary.  Most times, it is not necessary.  We can never retrieve time.  Reflect on your breakfast time spent with your hubby and smile that you made these memories together.😎

Out here with vacant land, people tour it and then you suddenly get an offer. This has happened twice this week. One offer came in after 5pm. Yes time is indeed irretrievable. Making time for one's self is extremely important. Thank you Eileen Burns 954.483.3912 and a Swedish God Morgon to you.
