Happy Hanukkah! Where Menorahs Will Light Up Greater Charlotte In 2025

Good morning Nina. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said it so much better than I can even think of, "Hanukkah is about the freedom to be true to what we believe without denying the freedom of those who believe otherwise." These days, these words are especially apropos.

I don't know much about Hanukkah, but I pray for all of those who celebrate it to be well.

I love this time of year. No matter what you believe you can find a festival...and for Seinfeld Fans we have Festivus

Happy Hanukkah! I really was moved by the words of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Chief of the United Hebrew Congregations. Especially poignant with the horrific shootings in Australia.

Hi Nina- I love what Rabbi Sachs said. Hopefully, we'll learn to embrace our beliefs and  at the same time be more accepting of the beliefs (and feelings) of others.

Nina I always enjoy your blogs about the Jewish Holy Days.

It's a dark Hanukkah this year with rising antisemitic incidents. Rob Reiner and his wife were killed today- and there is a lot not known right now- but my first thought was that he is Jewish and this happened on a Jewish holiday. Their murder may very well have nothing to do with his heritage- but this is not just my first inclination in the current environment, but of my friends and family as well. Speaking of family, my grandmother, who passed a long time ago, was friendly with the Reiner's. It was a function of living in the Bronx in the 1940's and 50's. All the neighborhood kids would play outside- and adults would watch them all from a distance. Since all the families knew each other, the kids didn't dare do anything out of line. My grandmother seemed to know everyone- she could be travelling in Europe, on a plane, in a city she had never been to- and people she knew from the Bronx would just find her. She knew the Reiner's and the Marshall's, and all the kids that became big name fashion designers from the Bronx- all the Jewish kids that grew up in the Bronx during that period of time. My mom likely met the Reiner's but would have been too young to remember as they moved to Westchester when Rob was still young. Carl Reiner was a comedy legend- and Rob had such an amazing role model to learn from. From his role as Meathead to Director of the Princess Bridge and When Harry Met Sally and the unforgettable A Few Good Men- absolutely legendary. He will be missed.   

A very timely message.  So sad about what happened in Australia as well as in the past here in the US.  Wayne Martin bolded words reinforce repeating the message as well.
