To Be or Not To Be?

By
Real Estate Agent with Dirt Road Real Estate SA676002000

After reading an article in an AZ business magazine that identified the 10 Top Skills for Real Estate Agents, I was reminded of this famous line from Shakespeare's Hamlet:

To Be or Not to Be: That is the Question

For me, I believe this article failed to mention and list the most important skill or trait and that is positive core values, ethics, moral code, call it what you will.

Either one will be ethical or not be ethical, and there is truly no question here.

REALTORS® swear to uphold the Code of Ethics.  In my 8 years in this particular industry, that swearing is not taken to mind, heart and behaviors by many agents. Professional real estate agents who do not have the designation of REALTOR® have their own ethics.

However for both I believe these three words matter:

Protect and Promote

We protect and promote our sellers and our buyers by our actions.  Through our ethical actions we demonstrate many of the skills this article mentioned such as:

  • Communication
  • Being Timely
  • Being Aware and Knowledgeable About Local to Regional to National Markets
  • Negotiations Skills
  • Continuing Education
  • Building Relationships with Other Professionals

A Little Epistemology

The origin of the word ethics started in Greece with the feminine of “ethikos” meaning “ethical, pertaining to character,” and from “ethos” meaning “moral character.”  In the 13th century, the Old French word was “etique” meaning “ethics, more philosophy.” Then in the 1600’s from Middle English there was “ethic” that being the study of morals.

Cicero coined the word “moral” from the Latin “moralis” meaning “pertaining to manners or customs” in translating the Greek “ethikos.”  This translation by Cicero connected ethics to character and proper conduct within society.

Returning to the quote “To Be or Not to Be.” There is no question.

We as professional real estate agents will be ethical at all times or not be ethical. There is no middle ground from my perspective.  Being ethical is not a choice like a smorgasbord.

As we look to the end of this year and the beginning of the next year, possibly these words of wisdom from others may strengthen our own ethics.

“A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon this world.”

Albert Camus

“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.”

Potter Stewart

“Live one day at a time emphasizing ethics rather than rules.”

Wayne Dyer

Leanne Smith - Your blog post reminds me of education. As 2025 comes winding down and the new year begins, now is good time for agents to enroll in Legal & Ethics once more. We are now living in a world of AI. I hope there is new information for agents. After all, the world is always changing. The more we know, the more we grow in wisdom. I especially liked this part of your blog post:

For me ethics are the foundation for everything, learning, relationships, interactions.  I have learned to keep my thoughts for the most part to myself given how quickly people want to argue and not have a civil conversation.

Hi Leanne... we were not Realtors in NY City and we still managed to be ethical. I've never believed that the NAR with had a lock on ethics. And I've always resented the fact that we now have to take ethics classes every few years... at the end of the day a person will be ethical or they won't.

I agree with you about being forced to take ethic classes. Either you are always ethical like yourself or not. Pretty simple. Thank you for chiming in,

I am with Miss Nina Hollander, Broker regarding the requirement to take an ethics course every two years ... even more so when the NAR has none!

I agree with you ... "will be ethical at all times or not be ethical. There is no middle ground.

Yes NAR is somewhat hypocritical when it comes to ethics. I just read the salary of the CEO in excess of $2 million. How does that protect and promote the clients (members)? It doesn't.

Good morning Leanne,

For some agents the requirement to take the mandatory ethics classes is a good chance to be reminded of  ethics in real estate (and in our personal lives). Its sad some need a reminder but its true!

I only wish the reminder would be consistently practiced which indeed makes it sad. Thank you and good morning Dorie.

It's sad that the Code of Ethics isn't always enforced.  We have so many rules in the world, and most of them are only enforced once in a while, haha.

What is even sadder we must have rules regarding how to behave. I agree greed often tops enforcement of ethics.

Hello Leanne - despite what some may think or say all of "anything" can't be lumped together but there are connections that can be found when digging a bit deeper.   Life is an ongoing journey.
