Hi Folks,
It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to check in here, but I’ve never forgotten my friends on ActiveRain. This community played a meaningful role in my journey — it’s where I learned how to blog, how to share ideas, and how to connect with
people who truly understood this business and this life.
A lot has been happening lately, and I wanted to share it with you first.
As of December 31, I will officially be retiring from Crest Backyard Homes and On The Level General Contractors. Beginning January 1, 2026, my kids will step in as the new owners, and I’ll be turning the page to a new chapter of my own.
I’m not entirely sure how this next adventure will show up here on ActiveRain — but after nearly two decades together, it felt right to share a bit more context with you.
After 50 years in the construction and real estate development industry, I have reached the freedom to choose what comes next.
I’ve spent most of my life designing and building things meant to last — homes, projects, businesses, and teams. That chapter shaped me, challenged me, and gave our family a foundation I’m deeply grateful for. Today, I leave it in capable hands with my kids.
This next chapter isn’t a reinvention so much as a refinement — a shift from building structures to hosting and curating space, from managing projects to creating a place where ideas, reflection, and meaningful work can unfold naturally.
For a little more color:
This has been our home for nearly half a century. Believe me, it’s taken
that long for it to evolve. Janis and I have no intention of ever leaving — this is home. But it’s also more than the two of us need, and too meaningful not to share.
So we’ve decided to open it, thoughtfully and selectively, to others — artists, photo and video creators, and small meditation or business retreats — in a way that feels dignified, respectful, and heartfelt. This is not an Airbnb, and it’s not a short-term rental churn. We’ll still be living here. Think of it less as renting a house and more as being hosted in a place.
Purpose-built.
Curated.
Intentional.
Hosted with care.
May I proudly introduce "Casa de Aire y Sol" ("House of Air and Sun"). A play on our last name, Arendsen.
A special place designed to be used thoughtfully and creatively.
I’m looking forward to sharing these special moments as they unfold.
Grateful for the road behind me —
clear about what’s next —
curious about where it leads.
To my many friends here — some of whom I truly consider family — thank you for being part of the journey.
And if any of you happen to find yourselves out our way, please do feel free to pay us a visit. Janis and I would love nothing more than to break bread together and share a glass of fine red.
Wishing you and yours a Blessed & Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.
Cheers,
— John
