Aha Challenge 2025 -Number One

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

Lew Corcoran and Patricia Feager issued an "Aha" challenge for December 2025. As if it caught me by surprise I drew a big blank and the blank remained with me for some time. It is almost the end of the monty and still nothing until this morning. Welcome to Wayne's world.

It was my senior year in college at the beginning of the second semester. My counselor had informed me that I did not have enough electives to graduate but had too many biology and chemistry classes. So for my final semester I loaded on available electives and they were few. One was a second semester business class as a first semester follow-up. I think I was allowed in out of pity. Five days into the class I had not taken the cellophane off the book. Pop quiz day. Whopee. 5 minute reprieve to review your notes.

That previous summer I had taken an Evelyn Woods speed reading course. Thank goodness. The sound of me ripping off the cellphone filled the room and brought a look on the face of the professor I will never forget.

We take the quiz and many are moaning. The professor was disgusted and dismissed the class for the day.

Next session he passes back the quizzes. I aced it. More luck than anything else but the important thing was I passed. After class she of us went to the student union for coffee and were discussing what we would do after college. Everyone talked about going in one direction or another. They asked why I would go to medical school and spend another eight years in school.

The light went on. I was not the right guy for medical school. AHA! I won't go. What am I going to do. I did not know. Graduated from college, got married and worked as a brake and front end mechanic. That was not the end but it took a few months before I had my next aha moment.

Entry one in the books!

Wayne Martin - I love this chapter of your life. I don't know if College prepares anyone to know what they are supposed to be or what to do with their life. At my College Graduation from the College of Lake County in Grayslake, IL, Carol Marine was the Commencement Speaker. She had a similar speech about her own graduation. Chicago TV Journalism was not what she planned; yet that's what she did in Chicago!

I'm really impressed with your Evelyn Wood Speed Reading course. That's quite an amazing story about how you managed to ace your class. I'm impressed! I believe you most likely did very well as a brake and front-end mechanic. If anyone understands, logic, it's you! I can't wait for Part 2!

Thank you for your first entry - it's a great chapter of your life!

Wayne Martin  At the very least, you knew enough to recognize a bumpy road, and the alternative allowed you possible a more pleasant life with a lot less stress and loans to pay back.

Wayne, Life is rarely a straight line is it?
I left for college expecting to make the Navy a career.   I also thought I'd be going nuke subs.  Instead, surface warfare for 6 years total, and then off to J&J for a 34 year career while multi-tasking with Liz and real estate for 20+ years.  Twists and turns :)

Wayne-What you were 'wise" at was knowing you did not want to spend years and years in school. Well, you did eventually but that's another story.

Wayne Martin I can relate, Wayne. I was on a path to a Phd and realized one day that I was not cut out to be a college professor thanks to my job as a teaching and researach assistant to a professor.

Wow, that is quite crazy that you didn't have to study much to ace the quiz. You are such an intelligent man, haha.

Hello Wayne - I appreciate the mention of the Evelyn Wood method for speed reading.  Although I never took the course, I thought it would have been helpful in school and life perhaps along with learning a better way to tear off cellophane.  Oh, well.  I appreciate this chapter it helped fill in some missing blanks that I don't recall knowing about you or had forgotten.

What a great story to kick off the challenge, Wayne Martin, and it sure brought a smile to my day 🙂. The way you traced that moment when everything shifted felt so real, and it’s a gift to read something that honest and full of life. Thanks for sharing this spark with us!
