The Enchanted Highway is Proof that Art (and Heart) Can Save a Town

According to Bob "RealMan" Timm, during his wonderful presentation on his home state, North Dakota, we needed to learn more about the Enchanted Highway. So, I read as much as I could to discover a little more about it. In a nutshell when you travel, some places surprise you — and then stay with you long after the drive is over. The Enchanted Highway is one of those places.

Tucked away in southwest North Dakota, this 32-mile stretch of road between I-94 and Regent is lined with massive metal sculptures rising out of wide-open prairie. We’re talking giant geese in flight, towering pheasants, grasshoppers the size of small cars and a whimsical tin family that makes you smile the moment you spot them. The best tip I found, you don’t just drive past — you pull over, get out and soak it all in--they're massive!

What makes The Enchanted Highway especially meaningful is the story behind it. Created by local artist Gary Greff, this wasn’t about fame or flash. It was about love for a hometown and a belief that creativity could bring people back. And it worked. A tiny town found new life, one sculpture at a time. And according to Bob, during the off-season, the local farmers enjoyed metal-working, creating many of these incredible structures.

There’s something deeply grounding about the drive down the Enchanted Highway. Travelers say the sky feels bigger, time slows down and you’re reminded that joy doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes it’s found on a quiet stretch of road, in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and you're surrounded by art made with heart!

If you’re ever road-tripping through North Dakota, Bob says you MUST take the exit. The Enchanted Highway is a beautiful reminder that imagination, determination and a little whimsy can turn the ordinary into something unforgettable.

Thanks Bob, for sending me down that beautiful rabbit hole! I found many photos of the whimsical artwork but, I couldn't use them as they were all copyrighted. I had ChatGPT recreate 'similar' images to share here, including the featured image.

Oh my, Debe Maxwell, CRS  - you piqued my interest! I would love to travel down the Enchanted Highway in southwest North Dakota. The idea and the innovation are very intriguing and interesting. Out of ordinary imagination, a community can save a town!

I wish Bob "RealMan" Timm  could do an instant replay of his presentation. It's one I wouldn't want to miss again.

Excellent choice of one of the many things I mentioned Debe Maxwell, CRS and I learned something: "I found many photos of the whimsical artwork but, I couldn't use them as they were all copyrighted." I had no idea. Somewhere I have 3 or four pictures BUT I'd be hard pressed to find them. Being it has been near 20 years since I've been down The Enchanted Highway I need to do it again soon and see whats new.

BTW another note about Regent North Dakota. When I traveled ND for a living there was a priest there that always kicked my rear when it came to cribbage. That was so long ago I also remember being wowed that he had a computer that ran at an amazingly fast 100 megahertz.

To identify the creator of the first 100 megahertz computer, consider the following points:

  1. The first 100 MHz computer was the Intel i486 microprocessor.
  2. Released in 1989, it marked a significant advancement in computing speed.
  3. The i486 was the first to integrate a floating-point unit on the chip.
  4. It was used in various personal computers, enhancing performance for users.
  5. Intel's development of the i486 solidified its position as a leader in the microprocessor market.

That's funny, Bob "RealMan" Timm! I would love some updated photos as I'm sure there are some new pieces of artwork on the Enchanted Highway to view.

Thanks for the reminder post, Debe Maxwell, CRS   I meant to look up the artwork but life, as happens this time of year, got in the way.  They look very large and would be most impressive in person.

Every photo I saw that had people standing beside the artwork looked massive - much larger than the adult humans! Ed Silva, 203-206-0754

I think you'll need to go in June-July, Kat Palmiotti. I'm so excited about the festivities that Patricia Feager found. We discussed that before the meeting started today - were your ears ringing?!!

Is that what you started to say at the beginning of the meeting Debe Maxwell, CRS ? We stay away from those big crowds so may go some other time, but not then. I have to see how long the Avatar of Teddy will be there!

Debe, this is a beautiful reminder of how place, creativity, and community can intersect in powerful ways. You captured not only the visual impact of the Enchanted Highway, but also the deeper story of intention and care behind it. The idea that art created with heart can revive a town and leave a lasting impression on travelers is both inspiring and grounding. This post makes readers want to slow down, take that exit, and experience something memorable rather than just pass through.

Visiting The Dakotas is on my to-do list.   A couple of the very few States I have not traveled to.  When I think about the Dakotas, I think of the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and maybe Sturgis.  And of course I have been warned to only go in the summer, because of the cold.

But this!  I was not aware such a road existed.  That art work looks exactly fabulous.

              Thanks for posting it!
