I am frequently asked, where did your nickname come from?
Many children ask, Were you named after Buzz Lightyear? I answer; no I'm older than he is.
Several people ask if I picked up the nickname in High School or College. My answer: I did attend High Point College, but that was not where my nickname came from.
Many years ago, I was being interviewed on the local AM radio station, and the host, Blaine Young, asked me, so how did your nickname come about?
Blaine assumed I picked the nickname up in College or High School; however, when I began the story, he became extremely nervous and later told me he was about to hit the mute button.
Buzz has been the name I have always answered to. When I was born in the early 1960s, as I have been told, there was an African warlord named Kaza-boo-boo in the news quite frequently. My Dad started calling me "Boo", which evolved into "Bood", "Boody", and finally "Buzz".
During the COVID era, I did a blog on the origin of my nickname and decided to find out who was Kaza-boo-boo? It took a while to come up with the proper spelling on Google ~ Joseph Kasa-Vubu was the President of the Republic of the Congo from 1960 to 1965.
The first day in school with a new teacher, during roll call was always an ordeal, as they would call my real name, "Stephen" and sometimes I would not acknowledge.
I have met a few others nicknamed Buzz, and when we compare how the name came about, most say your story wins the prize.
