Sage Cleansing (aka Smudging)

The Basics of Sage Cleansing

Burning sage—often called smudging—is a long‑standing cultural practice rooted primarily in certain Native American traditions. Today, many homeowners use it as a way to refresh a space, create a calmer atmosphere, or symbolically mark a new beginning when moving into a home.

Why People Use Sage in Their Homes

Sage is believed to offer several benefits:

  • Purification: Some types of sage have antimicrobial properties that may help reduce bacteria in the air.
  • Improved Mood & Stress Relief: Traditional use associates sage with better mood, reduced stress, and increased clarity.
  • Better Sleep & Focus: Certain compounds found in sage have been linked to improved sleep and cognitive support.
  • Symbolic Fresh Start: Many people burn sage to let go of past energy and create a positive environment—a reason the ritual is often used when moving into a new place.

How a Sage Cleansing Works

Cleansing is simple and typically involves:

  • Lighting a sage bundle until it smolders and releases smoke.
  • Gently wafting the smoke around rooms, objects, or doorways.
  • Keeping windows open to allow smoke—and symbolically, “old energy”—to exit.

(Just a heads-up: if there’s too much smoke, your smoke alarms might go off! Trust me, I’ve been there.)

Important Notes for Homeowners

  • Use fire‑safe containers and never leave burning sage unattended.
  • People with asthma or respiratory sensitivities should avoid inhaling the smoke.
  • Some types of sage are endangered; source bundles responsibly.
  • Remember that burning sage is a sacred cultural practice in some communities, so approach it respectfully.

Whether used for its scent, symbolic meaning, or traditional benefits, burning sage is a popular way for many homeowners to create a clean, refreshed, and welcoming atmosphere—especially when settling into a new home.

Kelly McGovern - I had lots of friends in Wisconsin who swear by sage. The Native American traditions are very prevalent there. Understanding cultural traditions is something everyone should understand - especially in the real estate profession.

Patricia Feager I have a client who swears by it! She gave me enough sage to last a very long time, so I use it occasionally. I lit some yesterday, which inspired my post :)

Kelly McGovern - it has been a long time since I saw sage for sale to burn for sage cleaning in stores. If I find one, I am going to give it a try!

Hi Kelly... can't say I've ever done this myself or had a client who did it. So I can't opine as to the efficacy of saging.

I never would have discovered it on my own if it weren’t for a client of mine who’s really into holistic medicine, crystals, and similar things.

It helps get rid of the old energy? I did that once (when I divorced my ex-wife). If it works like that I am in!

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty HA! It is recommended to sage a space after bad energy leaves!  I've had to smoke the place out a few times myself! Bye Felicia!

Kelly McGovern I think my response was to just sell the house and not give a forwarding address.

Am thinking of going to the garden and picking the rest of our sage and bundling them for  friends who could get rid of old energy or prevent negative energy and create a positive atmosphere, Kelly.
