What ever happened to S&H Green Stamps

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH RE LLC DC AB15253

I just noticed that Roy Kelley has an incredible number of points here in the Rain, prompting me to comment to him that it's too bad they aren't redeemable like S&H green stamps.  Since I seem to gravitate toward rabbit holes, that off the cuff comment made me wonder where you could redeem (or even collect) those desirable green stamps.  Turns out ...... you can't any more.  They went out of business in 2020.

S&H Green Stamps was a line of trading stamps popular from 1896 until the late 1980s. They were distributed as part of a rewards program operated by the Sperry & Hutchinson company (S&H), founded in 1896 by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson. During the 1960s, the company issued more stamps than the U.S. Postal Service  and distributed 35 million catalogs a year.  Customers received stamps at the checkout counters of supermarkets, gas stations and department stores among other retailers, which could then be redeemed for products from the catalog.  Top Value Stamps ceased operations in the early 1980s, after which S&H accepted savings books for those who had unredeemed Top Value books, before S&H itself ceased business.

Green Stamps were one of the early retail loyalty programs by which retailers purchased the stamps from the operating company and then gave them away at a rate determined by the merchant. Some shoppers chose one merchant over another because they gave out more stamps per dollar spent.

As I am climbing out of my rabbit hole, I want you to know that you are more than welcome to share this little bit of useless trivia

Good morning again, Lise... I know I'm aging myself when I say this but I remember those S&H Green Stamps only too well. As a kid in the 1950's I loved sticking them into the books.

Oh yes indeed, I remember the green stamps - my mom had her books and after shopping day, we'd stick them in. Thanks for the information!

Hmm, to be honest, I have never heard of S and H green stamps until reading your post, haha.  It sure would be nice if we were able to redeem our points in the Rain for something beneficial, haha.

This is a fun and surprisingly informative trip down memory lane. S&H Green Stamps were an early example of how loyalty programs influenced consumer behavior long before digital rewards and apps existed. It is fascinating to realize how widespread they were and how intentionally retailers used them to attract repeat business.

Thank you for sharing this bit of retail history. Not useless trivia at all, especially for those of us who appreciate how incentives and habits shape buying decisions over time.

Hi Lisa,
Oh yes, I remember S&H Greenstamps. Yes, I'm that old.

Watch for the next time the ActiveRain point store opens, so you can spend some of those hard earned points.

Good Thursday morning. Lise. It is sad that the ActiveRain points have no value.

Years ago, I did receive an ActiveRain T shirt that I still have.

I remember as a child, yes we had green stamps in the UK as well, sitting at the kitchen table and sticking them in the books. It was always fun to look through the catalog to see what could be obtained for what seemed like an ungodly amount of books/stamps.

I remember these! I used to go shopping with my mum and watch those green stickers come out of the register. I couldn’t wait to get home and stick them into the books. I’m not even sure what we traded them for.  For me, it was all about the thrill of completing the books!

Hi Lise- you most definitely brought back memories for me. I can remember pasting the stamps in the books when I was a kid.  For the life of me, I don't remember my mother redeeming those stamps for anything.

What a fun trip through time this was, Lise Howe, and it’s wild how a small detail can spark such a deep dive into something we all thought had vanished long ago 🙂. Your rundown brought those old loyalty days back to life, and it’s great to see how you tied it all together with a light touch. Thanks for sharing this bit of history that somehow feels both random and oddly comforting!

Lise Howe - S&H Green Stamps was how I got the things I needed but couldn't afford to buy when I first got married. S&H Green Stamps was the gift that kept on giving and the merchandise wasn't junk.

Oh, how I miss those stamps.

I licked and   stuck a LOT of green stamps for my mama when I was a kid.  And she still has things her house she "purchased" with them.

My mother's parents saved S&H green stamps.  Funny thing how some things that were good have gone the way of the DoDo bird.
