 Volunteerism: A Balancing Act

The giving of time in the community is one rewarding way to give back. As a business owner, it requires thoughtful contemplation to protect both personal fulfillment and professional success.

 Avoid running to meetings.

For many years, I served on multiple boards, committees and organizations. These roles brought genuine joy and a deep sense of purpose. In recent years, I considerably lightened the load.

 Preserve your energy and focus.

Time constraints may prevent 'a best effort' and the most responsible choice at the moment of realization is to respectfully step down. That can free an organization to find someone to fully engage.

 Spend priceless time wisely.

Look for opportunities that naturally build relationships, opens doors and supports professional growth, while maintaining some sense of balance. Prioritize and revisit often to ensure the alignment of core values.

The best result in volunteering is quality -over- quantity, focus to give fully, blending personal passion with professional wisdom. Let volunteering become your doable source of purposeful satisfaction within the community.

That's all for now. Good day!

This is a wise perspective, especially for anyone running a business while trying to stay engaged in their community. It is easy to overcommit when the heart says yes, but sustainable service really does require protecting your time and energy. When volunteering aligns with both personal values and professional goals, it becomes far more meaningful and effective.

Hi Wanda,

Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding, but it does require intention, especially when you are balancing work, life, and everything in between. I also think that as we age, we naturally become more discerning about how we spend our precious time. At least that has been true for me.

There was a season when saying yes to everything felt good, and another season where stepping back felt like the wiser choice. Protecting your energy so you can show up fully, whether for an organization, your business, or yourself and your family is not selfish.

When volunteering fits naturally, it feels less like an obligation and more like a meaningful extension of who you are.

The giving of time toward volunteering has to be meaningful and not interfere with making a living, Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518. Lack of motivation results!

Am finally learning how to be still, Carol Williams, rather than thinking I need to be present in the office everyday or being part of a group that tends to be ok with any warm body to fulfill their To-Do List.

Being home has become more enjoyable as well!

Am more particular when volunteering now, George Souto. It has been said that you will be remembered for your service...not really true, for the most part!

HI Wanda- it's important to give back to your community. However, we have to understand that we can't be everywhere or do everything.

You're absolutely right about time commitment and energy. After serving as the President, Vice President and Secretary of a local nonprofit, and chairman of various events, I decided that was way too much energy expended on that one thing, and I've made appropriate changes. Great post!
