To be clear, I'm no authoritarian on religious matters. Nor am I the sharpest or brightest color in a crayon box, but there are quotes we all find interesting. If it's something that resonates with you, it doesn't matter where the source came from, if it makes good sense, then maybe that's where we find our superpower. Could it be, our superpower is as old as ancient wisdom always has been?
"Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to
become angry." ---James 1:19
Throughout our life we learn to listen but often what we hear, is misunderstood. If not listening correctly occurs frequently, then listening to what other people say poorly, can result in bad outcomes due to:
- Misunderstood instructions.
- Misdirected steps in the process.
- Erroneous actions that make mistakes.
Let's try to break it down and think about it slowly.
Be quick to listen
Be slow to speak
Be slow to anger
Anyone who has been a parent knows, if you speak and your child doesn't listen, maybe they don't want a lecture or a speech, all they want is for you to get to the point.
If you're a business owner, real estate agent, or teacher, if all you want to do is talk and be heard, and the other person isn't listening, maybe it's because they heard it so many times before, they can finish your sentence before you're done speaking.
What if, we were born with superpower that comes through listening with our ears, being slow to speak, and being slow to anger? Could that superpower or ancient wisdom improve our relationships and make us all more successful?
Through all stages of life, seniors, adults, teenagers, and children size up others by what we say and how we behave, which is the effect of perception. Each time we communicate, verbally, nonverbally, or through written communication, we are making a public or private perception. How we perceive others is often a reflection of ourselves. Perhaps if we become better listeners, we'll become more successful.
