An AR Sunday Topic on Superpower

Journal for Sunday, 1/11/206

To be clear, I'm no authoritarian on religious matters. Nor am I the sharpest or brightest color in a crayon box, but there are quotes we all find interesting. If it's something that resonates with you, it doesn't matter where the source came from, if it makes good sense, then maybe that's where we find our superpower. Could it be, our superpower is as old as ancient wisdom always has been?

"Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to
become angry." ---James 1:19

Throughout our life we learn to listen but often what we hear, is misunderstood. If not listening correctly occurs frequently, then listening to what other people say poorly, can result in bad outcomes due to:

  • Misunderstood instructions.
  • Misdirected steps in the process.
  • Erroneous actions that make mistakes.

Let's try to break it down and think about it slowly.

Be quick to listen

Be slow to speak

Be slow to anger

Anyone who has been a parent knows, if you speak and your child doesn't listen, maybe they don't want a lecture or a speech, all they want is for you to get to the point.

If you're a business owner, real estate agent, or teacher, if all you want to do is talk and be heard, and the other person isn't listening, maybe it's because they heard it so many times before, they can finish your sentence before you're done speaking.

What if, we were born with superpower that comes through listening with our ears, being slow to speak, and being slow to anger?  Could that superpower or ancient wisdom improve our relationships and make us all more successful?

Through all stages of life, seniors, adults, teenagers, and children size up others by what we say and how we behave, which is the effect of perception. Each time we communicate, verbally, nonverbally, or through written communication, we are making a public or private perception. How we perceive others is often a reflection of ourselves. Perhaps if we become better listeners, we'll become more successful.

Good morning!

We can all tell when someone is not really listening to us, and the reverse is just as true. Truly listening is a sign of respect.

Kat Palmiotti - When someone stops listening to us, that's clearly a signal to stop, change directions, and listen to what they have to say. The highest compliment you can give another person is respect.

Thank you!

Have a nice day!

Good morning, Patricia. I've always loved Ben Franklin's quote about anger: "Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame." And Peter Drucker's quote about listening is also one of my favorites: “The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.”

Patricia the Bible is packed with excellent quotes and advice, and James 1:19 is definitely worth applying to both or personal and business life.

George Souto - what the world needs now is now more bible study groups and bible quotes! There's a lot of wisdom in the Holy Bible.

Patricia, you can tell when someone isn't listening, and is frustrating.  It takes a while to hone those skills.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner - it doesn't take long to realize when someone isn't listening. It used to bug me when I was working with couples who were first time home buyers and one would ask an important question. While I was busy answering the question, the other one was off wondering on their own. It was annoying and I ended up repeating often.

What a thoughtful piece, Patricia Feager. And it hits with a quiet truth that lingers. The way you framed listening as a real superpower feels spot on, and it’s a reminder that never seems to lose its value. Thanks for sharing something that nudges us to slow down and tune in a little more 🙂

Lew Corcoran - I do believe we were created to help one another without dominating, controlling, or being disrespectful. We live in such a fast-paced world. There are pearls of wisdom waiting to pick up and learn from when we stop, slow down, and truly listen.
