Your HOW in Real Estate Is...?

Possibly, some of us we may remember the TV series “Mission Impossible.” Peter Graves (the brother to James Arness). Graves played Mr. Phelps, a leader of a covert team, MI. Phelps would received instructions via a tape recorder with a specific mission and the desired result. Of course, Phelps always had the choice not to accept the mission as well as the tape would self-destruct in 5 seconds.

The definition of mission is “a specific task with which a person or a group is charged.” (Source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

From my experience in working with small to even larger businesses, the published Mission Statement is often the Vision as there is no specificity in what is called the HOW.  I have asked CEO’s to managers to read the Mission Statement and consider this question:

If you read this Mission Statement to an employee and then asked that employee what specific action did he or she undertake today to achieve the stated Mission, how do you think that employee would respond?

The Mission Statement is the HOW of how to get to the Vision, the vanishing point on the horizon. Again, the reason there is a vanishing point, is the WHAT may change as life is full of constant change.

The HOW is an action statement with specific goals and sometimes even timelines integrated into this Statement. For me the Mission Statement encapsulates the first three statements, the WHY (Purpose), the WHAT (Values) and the WHERE (Vision).

I believe the HOW is the internal emotional motivation to secure the desired results, the goals, on the path to reaching the VISION. Possibly each Monday morning, it may make sense to re-read your HOW, check your strategic action plan and determine what goals and the respective action steps will be undertaken during the forthcoming week, month or quarter.

Mission Statement for 2026

To focus on listing land and a 90% referral business while reserving personal time for my own personal goals including buying horse in late summer or early fall of 2026. To return to securing 36 hours of continuing education annually, to have a minimum of one date every two weeks with my husband, and to take time to reflect, rejoice and renew my life both professionally and personally especially my health.

NOTE:  Since the Mission Statement is goal focused, I believe this statement should start with an action verb as should each goal.

May 2026 be a year where your success is far more planned and aligned than in previous years.

Thank you for reading this four part series.

Good morning Leanne Smith I do remember the "Mission Impossible" show, I watched it every time it came on. We do have similar missions and making the impossible possible is our mission. Enjoy your 2026 and make it the best mission ever🤩

Good to read someone else remembers that show. Making the impossible possible, possible is a good framing of one's mission. Thank you and Happy Monday.

This is a thoughtful way to frame business planning, especially in a year where many agents are trying to regain clarity after so much market change. When the HOW is written as an action-driven mission instead of a vague slogan, it becomes something you can measure and manage. I also like how you tied professional goals to personal priorities because burnout is real in this business. A mission that leaves room for health, relationships, and renewal is far more sustainable than one that only chases volume.

With my executive coaching practice, the clients received both professional and personal plans based upon professional and personal life wheels.  Being unbalanced between the two wheels creates poor performance and results. Good morning and thank you for your affirmation.

Love this, Leanne! Breaking down the HOW like this makes mission statements feel practical and personal. Your approach to linking goals with action steps is so inspiring—and now I’m curious about that horse! 🐴

As to the horse, we have some forthcoming neighbors who are also clients that are horse people, Arabian horses.  They are building about a 10th of a mile away from our home.  We have come to an agreement to pay for a horse stall and to be able to board a horse on their property. If all goes well, this should happen by late summer or early fall.  I am looking possibly to rehome an Arabian gelding or who knows what.

Hi Leanne,

This is a great reminder that missions only work when they move beyond words and into action. So many missions and goals self-destruct quietly, not in five seconds like the tape, but over a few weeks or months when there is no clear HOW to guide daily behavior. Without specific actions, most well-intended missions are either abandoned or slowly forgotten.

Your emphasis on the HOW as the bridge between vision and results is right on. Re-reading it regularly, tying it to concrete action steps, and keeping it emotionally meaningful are what keep a mission alive rather than just another statement on the wall. Your 2026 mission is refreshingly clear, balanced, and actionable. I am anxious to hear when you get your horse.
