It's been a LONG time since I did a post here, and the first thing I noticed is that I needed to update SO many things in my profile.
My office moved, I started a construction company, my interests evolved a bit.
We built another house. We navigated life and death, quite literally. As I write this, my husband is flying to New York to oversee the burial of the last person on his father's side of the family. I can't go this time, because some significant weather came to our area, and my construction company is extremely busy. It's even been declared a state of emergency.
After several weeks of extreme cold, we got massive amounts of snow. Now it's melting, sliding off roofs, caving in roofs, ripping decks off the sides of homes, and there is so much water... with the ground frozen up from weeks of sub zero temperatures, the water is slow to find a place to settle... and hopefully it does before we freeze again.
Juneau, Alaska is generally in the 20's and 30's in December, but we were as low as -18F in some areas. The cold usually doesn't come until mid January and that's usually in the teens, rarely below zero. 82" of snow was measured at our airport, with significantly more in some areas of town. And most of that snow fell in about 5 days.
Our larger mall is still closed, and Fred Meyer is supposed to reopen today. Schools may need to do a few makeup days. Our town is a mess but we will get through this.
Debbie, it HAS been a while (13 years) since you last posted. It does sound like your area is a mess right now, and hope it gets better for you and the residents!
Debbie White now that you are back, I hope you start to blog regularly. Welcome back!
Hello Debbie White welcome back to ActiveRain Community. I look forward reading your blogs.
Hi Debbie- welcome back. I've never lived in a heavy snow area so I can only imagine the weather you have!!!!
I was in Juneau (and Haines and Sitka) a few summers ago and I asked about the winters and was surprised to hear they were usually not that cold. It sounds as though the snow and cold was a surprise!
Juneau is usually hovering in the 20's and 30's throughout the winter, with the occasional dip into the teens, and the rare below zero weather. We had two weeks where there were more days below zero than during the previous 16 years combined, then 82" of snow (more in some areas) dropped on top of that in a period of less than a week. Definitely not the Juneau winters I'm used to!
Welcome back, Debbie.
We're still here. 😊
