A warm home begins with a warm heart. A warm heart enjoys the good company of warm and trusting friends.

Surprising Facts

Fuzzy socks were introduced in the 1970's and became very popular in the 1980's thanks to new knitting techniques. Flashdance was filmed in late 1982 before being released in 1983.

The oldest known slippers, were found in a cave, are around 10,000 years old, made from woven fabric with a toe pocket and thong.

Ancient records from China show slippers were used as far back as 4700 BC. Early slippers featured symbols of dragons and were made with cotton and leather.

Ancient Egyptians wore sandals, precursors to modern slippers made from papyrus and palm leaves found in some early tombs.

Other ancient/early cultures wore woven fabric (rope rush, plant fibers like papyrus, palm, rice straw) before cotton, rawhide, and leather.

European slippers appeared around 1478. Early peasants wore clogs, evolving into aristocratic velvet slippers later.

Native American Indians made moccasins out of soft hides and decorative beadwork for indoor use. When I took Native American Potawatomi Indian Tribe history classes in Illinois, moccasins were handcrafted by the women from tanned deer hides. They punched holes and used animal tendon for thread to sew them inside out.

Something I had fun making during a three-day weekend Workshop in Wisconsin was a drum made from deer hide. Using an awl to punch holes was hard work! We worked in pairs to make the holes to thread and sew the drum together. Then, we were given beads if we wanted to decorate our drums sticks.

Do you have any old shoe or deer hide stories you want to share? Perhaps Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 has additional knowledge about slippers from his Antique Business.

This was a fun read, Patricia... but I can't contribute any stories. If I'm at home I am always barefoot... no socks, no slippers for me.

Good morning, Nina Hollander, Broker - I'm glad you enjoyed it! I had fun creating it too.

As soon as I get past my door, I remove my shoes too. Then I go barefoot. I don't even wear socks indoors. Whenever I visited Wisconsin, which was frequent long ago, I always wanted moccasins, but they were too expensive! And I thought to myself, I will probably never wear them anyways.

Knowing how they were made now, I would appreciate them more today than yesterday.

What an interesting overview of slippers. As for deer hide, it would take a lot of work to turn a deer hide into slippers. Timing, process, tools, are all important and if you don't know what you're doing, well, you won't be able to use the hide for anything!

Kat Palmiotti - Working with deer hide to make my drum was very difficult. I had to order the deer hide before I left for the Workshop in Wisconsin. It was delivered wet in special packaging. The instructor for the workshop provided specific instructions of what to do after the hide was delivered. All other supplies would be provided by her upon arrival. It did take three full days to make one round hide for the top of the drum. Having it stretched had to be perfect. Every day we learned something new in class. Punching those holes evenly spaced had to be perfect. Once we were all done and played our drums on the last day, we heard how some drums sounded better than others. It was an art and a science to get it to play the drums correctly. Some drums were too tight, some not tight enough, and some were just right! Mine turned out okay, but I struggled to make the drumsticks.

I wish I would have signed up for classes more when I had a chance.

Good morning Patricia. Like Nina Hollander, at home I am barefoot. When I were shoes I prefer no socks except for some extreme weather days. I remember my Mom buying me slippers when I was young and putting them in a closet until I out grew them and she replaces them. Somewhere along the line she must have got the message because she did give up. Enjoy.your day.

Wayne Martin - I go barefoot without socks in my house too. Right now, it's chilly inside. I just noticed it is 41 degrees. I better put on flip flops when I get off the carpeting. Ceramic floors on slabs are much colder in winter here too.

Have a warm and wonderful day!

My shoe stories would be boring, Patricia Feager . As shoemakers or cobblers are gone, they get tossed when they are done.

What a fun mix of heart, history, and those small comforts that make a day feel warmer, Patricia Feager. I enjoyed the way you tied these details together, and it left me smiling at how something as simple as slippers can carry so much story and care. Thanks for sharing this thoughtful slice of life with us ☺️
