AI Graphics - one thing AI doesn't do well

As many who attend the ActiveRain Zoom calls know, using AI to design photos can be a lot of fun. There are many tools and platforms that can be used (free of charge at the moment) to design visuals such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Bing Images and more. The results of prompts can definitely be interesting!

So this morning I read an article on Popular Science that states that AI cannot properly design analog clocks that are set at a specific time. The article indicated that AI would put the numbers in the wrong place, and the hands aren't always actually in the clock. Apparently humans can read clocks, and AI cannot and the reasons aren't clear. Some of the hypothesis were that there aren't enough pictures of clocks at different times available for AI to learn how to tell time. Another thought is that AI doesn't have the visual perception needed to come up with an answer. And another issue is that for marketing purposes, 10:10 is usually the time set on analog watches, both in stores and online. So most AI tools come up with a clock at 10:10.

Here is the webpage that Popular Science shared so you can see what they saw - and below is a partial screenshot of their site so you don't have to go see for yourself.

This image was taken at 6:38 which is what the clocks should show as they were "live" clocks.

Well those were definitely not quite right. But as I am somewhat suspicious of everything I read online nowadays, I decided to try it for myself. Using various tools, I plugged in this prompt "I would like a picture of an analog clock set at 5:25." That seems simple enough! Here are the results:

The first thing I noticed is that all the clocks did display the numbers correctly, unlike those in the article above. The three top images were made using the Bing Image tool - but I tried a different AI platform each time. Dalle-3 was very pretty, but all three images were set at 10:10 and not at 5:25. Chat GPT almost had it right with a time of 5:22. Almost but not quite! Google's Gemini tool was correct in terms of the time. I tried to get Gemini to make the clock a lot prettier by asking for an antique clock but it returned the exact same response.

So in summary? At this point in time, Artificial Intelligence tools have difficulty reading "circle" time. Since this is such a simple concept for humans, I wonder what else AI might have trouble with? So use AI tools with care, and double check that everything in your photos are exactly as you want!!

Hi Kat... I haven't tried with clocks, but there have been other things that I've found AI can't do well in terms of pictures regardless of which platform you use.

Kat, haven't used AI very much, so haven't tried asking for a clock yet.   I have noticed a few other things I don't really care for.

Kat Palmiotti  I bookmarked your post so I could go back to it. I find you really have to be specific with AI the first time, and even more so with the free one. I would like to see more in the Zoom sessions, as they are exciting and we learn from each other. Second, we seem to take more interest in others' joining and learning.

Kat Palmiotti I have not use AI to create graphics very much, but one thing that I have noticed is that if AI does not come close to creating what I want on the first try, it generally will not get it right no matter how many times I change the prompt.

George Souto You have to know what you want when you ask - I am learning to be specific - funny, you should say that, I noticed that today

Hi Kat-very interesting!!!   Remember when we started with AI and hands and arms were wonky. I mentioned it to my little cousin's husband who works in computer technology. His thought was that it was because in pulling from all of the photos etc in the cloud, most are of people's faces so hands, arms are harder to do.

What I've seen in just a few months is that the hands and arms are gettng better.

Hi Kat-

A.I. is getting better and better. just give it more time and before we know it, that 5:25 time will be very nicely displayed on a very pretty clock on all platforms.

That’s interesting Kat Palmiotti - I haven’t experimented with the graphics portion of AI but I will soon.  Some of the graphics posters here in the rain have used looked quite good.  Now you’ve made me want to play around with it more

I'm sending my AI to watchmaker. Interestingly, the AI could not make it to 5:25. I'll wait 30 days and see if it can be fixed.

Kat, this is fascinating. I have not ventured into having AI design a clock face yet. For my pictures I typically work with Canva and just accept what’s on the site but now you’ve got me thinking!

Hi Kat, how about that.  There are other repercussions as well.  In general.  One news item recently: some high tech exec bought the Meta VR glasses and basically went psycho a few months later.  Meta just laid off 5,000 people associated with that project and lost billions in investment.

In other cases, specifically houses and buildings: You will never get back exactly what you've uploaded except in rare cases.  The algorithm tends to add or leave out or enhance things that aren't there.  In some cases the results are quite amazing but to get precise results is difficult.  One app I use is called Visoid which tends to get nearly everything right.

So what is happening is that companies are buying the main AI engines and creating apps to match specific industries.  Nano Banana is being used under the shells of several image generators, as well as most of the other ones you mention in your article.

The AI boom may bust at any minute btw, as the ROI is projected too far out and because of the proliferation of the shell AI image generators there simply aren't enough people using the tech often enough to even keep the subscriptions out of the red.  hmmmm.

Jan 20, 2026 09:08 AM
Kat Palmiotti

I was thinking something a little different John Henry, Florida Architect about the AI Image generators - and that is that they'll start asking for subscription fees to use them. The Gemini tool does use the Nano Banana image generator as you mentioned and that is the only one that was correct. I wouldn't be surprised if Nano started charging Gemini and Gemini started charging the end users.

I hadn't heard of tech exec and the glasses. That's crazy!
