Reflect, Rejoice, Renew, as Life Transitions

The January 2026 Challenge is big hosted by  Carol Williams and Leanne Smith and is one that each view with a different lens.

Reflections

At 13 years old, I earned my first official pay for work when I sat as a union musician with a group that was, on so many levels an education, but still it was a check for labors.

From there it would be all manner of labors:

  • carpenter
  • concrete laborer
  • postal worker
  • landscaper
  • mechanical designer
  • All while maintaining a band and playing all over the state until graduating college
  • Military service,
  • 38 years in engineering, engineering service, sales, sales management
  • 23 years in real estate

Each taught me something and kept me grounded with the reality that if you want to succeed, you need to get busy.

Rejoice

Entering 2026, the horizon has no direct path as the time for work is over.  Family obligations are there that will require attention, but my focus is not the same

As I enter 2026, my income is the remunerations I have accumulated over my working years less the stipends that a judge awarded my ex-wife.

No longer is the clock ticking to remind me that I have an appointment. Now the clock works when I have an early flight with my wife, or an early tee time at the course.

Of course, I can set it for a fixed AM time, for 2 weeks and instead of jumping out of bed to start the workday, shut it off and roll over, unless it is that early tee time.

Renew

This new transition may well prove to be the most difficult for me, as my internal clock has been wound tight for years, and the art of decompression is something that I have not had a lot of experience doing.

As we are all somewhat adaptable, I'm sure I can take a class on how to relax.

Unlike many of the twists I have taken over the years, this requires a bit less energy to achieve, but I'm hoping that it does take over. Quite possibly the joints, and muscles, will remind me of that far too often.

Each day may be a new adventure and as I have never read this book, I am anxious to see what the next chapter brings.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - I'm finding life goes by quicker than I ever imagined. The sharing of your life's history is a good reflection of where you were then and now. Throughout our lives, we wear so many different hats, travel many miles, learn a lot, like you shared, may put up with stuff we never thought we would, and we make decisions while meeting challenges.

Golf is a wonderful alternative to all the pressures that gradually built up from youth, the military, engineering, real estate sales, to retirement. Being a musician taught you disciple and a good ear for listening. May you stay healthier each and every day. I hope you continue to dream and live fully.

I enjoyed reading your entry for this month's challenge.

Good morning Ed. You decompress quicker than you now think. That said the internal clock I used for years still goes off at 5;15AM. And the reset button has disappeared. The big difference is I don't have to hurry my morning coffee or drink it in the car. I have friends who must have had a better clock. They retired and regularly sleep in. May you be more like them unless you need an alarm to make a tee time. Enjoy your day.

HI Ed... I get it about that body clock that's been "trained" for many years. I still wake up not at the crack of dawn but long before the crack of dawn the way I did in my corporate life. I have a feeling it will continue even when I retire. As for relaxing... that I have no problem with.

Jan 13, 2026 10:52 AM
Ed Silva, 203-206-0754

Nina Hollander, Broker  I used that clock a lot when having to take early morning flights. I find that I do get up well before normal waking hours, but that is due to nature and age.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 I wonder what the fact that I've been waking up without an alarm clock at 4am since my 20's says about me.

Ed, life does change, and glad you ONLY have to get up for a tee time.    Life being retired will be exciting (or maybe RELAXING) versus the craziness of our real estate business.

What a thoughtful look at a life built through grit, change, and a whole lot of heart, Ed Silva, 203-206-0754, and it’s striking how each chapter you shared carries its own quiet strength. Your take on easing into this next season feels honest and hopeful, and it’s a gift to read something that speaks with such clarity and warmth. Thanks for sharing this journey with us 🙂

HI Ed- Congratulations on your new world of more golf time!!!     How did I not know that you played in a band??? What instrument??

My own experience with retirement has been that I still feel compelled to get up and out early, even if I have no appointments. I have never been able to sleep in, but that's me.

You'll find your pace and what works for you.

Jan 13, 2026 07:41 PM
Ed Silva, 203-206-0754

Kathy Streib here in the Northeast, there is a huge population of families from Europe, and for them, there was one instrument that was very common, and that was the accordion.

At 8, I was pushed into lessons and by 10 had started playing beyond the abilities of the teachers I had.

At 12 I won state competitions for my age and at 13, my then teacher asked if I wanted t earn some side money playing with groups, through the union. Each gig was worth $40-$50 for 4 hours, and I was delivered door to door.

In high school, I started a group with some of the kids I knew, and we were either a trio or a 6-piece band with abilities to go to 8. Depending on the event it was the accordion or the organ

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754  - thanks for the information. That's really cool. I met an accordion player here and he stays busy with music gigs.

I didn't know about the band either and can't wait to hear what you played.

As for "retirement" - you'll find things to do and before you know it, you'll wonder how you had time for a career!

Jan 14, 2026 05:15 AM
Ed Silva, 203-206-0754

Kat Palmiotti  I want to have those things to be my wants, not what someone else would like for me to do.

And I left a detailed answer on Kathy Streib 's comment.

I kept the group though college and would come home on weekends to play jobs and earnt $200-$300 for a weekend of maybe 2 jobs.
