The Bath Mat - The Dirtiest Object in Your Bathroom

As a REALTOR with nearly 20 years of experience showing homes, I’ve always found it pretty gross when people step all over a seller’s bath mat. After all, that’s where you step out of the shower clean! Whenever I see one, I make sure to walk around it, and when I watch others step on it with their shoes, I can’t help but cringe.

I always suggest sellers place their bath mats over the tub edge or fold them up and store them in the linen closet.

A study by a British company involving thousands of households found that bath mats can harbor more germs than toilet bowls. Used every day after a shower or bath, they’re constantly exposed to moisture, dead skin cells, and occasional splashes of contaminated water from nearby toilets. This mix creates the perfect breeding ground for fecal bacteria, fungi, and yeast.

What’s even more concerning is that the survey shows nearly a third of people clean their carpets only two or three times a year, even though they’re used daily. Over time, this thick fabric can quietly turn into a hidden hotspot for microorganisms that may irritate the skin, affect the respiratory system, or even lead to infections if the immune system is compromised.

Now add dirty shoes to this mat and presto! you're in danger!

Bacteria! Viruses! Protozoa! Fungai! Gross! Ick! Nasty! Gag!

Yuck

If you’re not asking visitors to remove their shoes during showings, it’s best to put the bath mat away.

Kelly McGovern great "warning," Kelly. I also tell my sellers to remove all bath mats for showings and not just because they carry germs, but also because we don't know where prospective buyers have been walking. (My bath mats are washed twice a week and we don't wear shoes in the house, so that helps, as well.)

It’s just one of my pet peeves! I recently attended open houses with my buyers and saw so many people walking all over the bath mats.  Yuck!

My husband built a custom bath mat rack so that the mat never stays on the floor beyond taking a shower.  Good points about what not to leave on the floor during a tour.

Good morning Kelly. No concerns in my home. Bath mat hung after showering and it is washed often. As a result of keeping it clean we also replace it often. Enjoy your day.

Many bath mats can be machine washed now so there's really no reason not to keep them clean.

I have one, Kat Palmiotti, that is large and can't be put in the washer because the weight when wet is sooooo heavy!  I have to hand wash it in my tub and then it takes forever to air dry.  I'll know better next time I buy one!  The one I have was pricey too!

This is a very good warning to share. We do use bath mats that are machine washable at our home.

We don't wear shoes indoors and when we step out of the shower it is always on a clean towel just for reason you mention.

Good one, Kelly- It's something we don't often think about. Thankfully mine can be easily washed and dried. In the summer, I love letting them air dry.

Kelly, our mats should be clean when we get out of the shower and even thinking about people walking on mine grosses me out.

Since we enter into bathrooms to clean our bodies, it doesn't make any sense at all to have a dirty bath mat, haha.

Dirt and Yuck aside - bath mats should be removed. I see them as a potential trick hazard Kelly McGovern

I am in the camp of not wearing shoes in my home - I wear house slippers or house flip flops.
