Why Mental Health Matters in Real Estate Leadership ๐Ÿค๐Ÿง  - Sonya

I want to share a conversation that hit home on a human level and a leadership level. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ—๏ธ
I recently interviewed Sonya Bohmann on the Time To Shine Today podcast, and this discussion matters for anyone who leads people, works with people, or simply cares about people.

Sonya is the Executive Director of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. She comes from more than a decade inside commercial remodel, refresh, and facilities maintenance, so she understands pressure, deadlines, and grind culture from the inside out. Sheโ€™s using that experience to help build a zero-suicide industry by normalizing mental health conversations where they matter most.

This quote anchored our entire conversation:
โ€œIf we started thinking about psychological safety or mental wellness at the same level we think about physical safety, we would be able to move the needle.โ€ ๐Ÿง

Here are a few takeaways I walked away with that apply far beyond construction:

  1. Mental health deserves the same priority as physical safety, because real strength protects both ๐Ÿง
  2. Most people are not afraid of hard work, they are afraid of judgment ๐Ÿค
  3. Leadership begins with one simple question, โ€œAre you okay?โ€ ๐Ÿšช
  4. When someone resists help, progress still happens by planting seeds ๐ŸŒพ
  5. You do not need credentials or a title to make a difference โค๏ธ
  6. Shared stories reduce isolation and build trust ๐Ÿ”—
  7. Culture shifts when leaders check in on people, not just performance ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ
  8. Inch by inch progress matters, even when results are not immediately visible ๐ŸŒฑ

This episode reminded me that leadership is about intention over attention. Itโ€™s about asking hard questions, staying present, and choosing people first. Whether youโ€™re running a job site, a business, or a household, this message applies.

Iโ€™d love to hear from you.
How do you check in on your people, clients, or teams when pressure is high?

This is an important conversation for every industry that operates under pressure. When leaders make space for psychological safety, people perform better and feel valued at the same time. Real leadership shows up in how we care for the people behind the work.

Love this reminder! ๐Ÿ’› Asking โ€œAre you okay?โ€ is real leadership. Checking in on people matters just as much as hitting deadlines. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿค
