Because Every Day Should Start With A Bagel... It's National Bagel Day

A Hole Lot of Happiness — National Bagel Day: January 15

January 15th is National Bagel Day, which basically means you have official permission to enjoy an extra bagel (or two) today. Whether you love them toasted, stacked with cream cheese, or piled high with all the toppings, bagels are one of those foods that just make everything taste better. Chewy on the outside, soft on the inside, and endlessly customizable — it’s no wonder they’ve become a breakfast favorite for so many Americans.

"A bagel is a doughnut with the sin removed."

- George Rosenbaum

WHEN IT COMES TO BAGELS, DID YOU KNOW:

  • That 60+% of Americans surveyed eat a bagel for breakfast a least twice a week? As someone (unknown) said: "Bagels are the breakfast of champions."

  • That the American bagel market was valued at $6.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $7.35 Billion by 2030?

  • That New Jersey and New York are not the states where the most bagels are consumed. Apparently the most number of bagels consumed are in Maine! Who knew? The average American eats some 39 bagels per year.

  • That Monticello New York, the birthplace of the bagel, and official bagel capital of the world, is known not only for the quaint charm of the town, but also for the annual Bagel Festival?

  • That bagels must be round in shape to be considered a bagel? Or that the hole in a bagel is to make them bake faster and stackable on a wooden pole for selling?

  • That bagels are the only bread that is boiled before being baked? They are dipped in boiling water for approximately 3-5 minutes before going into the oven.

  • That the bagel-making process was once a trade secret controlled by the Beigel Bakers' Union which only admitted sons of existing members into the union and conducted its meetings almost entirely in Yiddish?

"Bagels: The perfect balance of chewy, crunchy, and delicious."

WHERE TO BUY GREAT BAGELS IN THE CHARLOTTE AREA

Charlotte is home to quite a few "bagelries," as I call them. Here are eight top picks for Charlotte bagel lovers:

  • Poppyseed Bagels, have two locations in the Greater Charlotte area; one in Matthews, one in Weddington. They advertise themselves as NY-style bagels. Family-owned and operated by a third generation, Poppyseed bake their bagels in-house.

  • Bagel Boys, whose shop is in Waverly in south Charlotte off Providence Road. They also advertise themselves as NY-style bagels served with true Southern hospitality and offer well over a dozen types of bagels.

  • Jeff's Bagel Run,  in Blakeney in south Charlotte. These are not styled as NY-style bagels and they boast that their bagels are never toasted. They have some six types of bagels and lots of cream cheese options. The espresso cream cheese is like eating coffee ice cream!

  • New York Old School Bagel & Deli, opened in Carmel Village in 2024. It won Charlotte's Best of the Best (BOB) award in 2024. This "bagelry" offers some 20 different kinds of bagels.

  • Poppy's Bagels & More, opened since 2010, have two locations in Charlotte. One at 2921 Providence Road and one at 2201 South Boulevard. Family-owned and operated, Poppy's bagels offers a dozen varieties of bagels.

  • Family Dough Bagels, in Mint Hill, who advertise themselves as "just New Yorkers makin' bagels." All bagels are made on premises by the Brooklyn, NY natives. They also offer fresh whipped cream cheese and house-made flavored cream cheese for their bagels.

  • Pop Up Bagels in Charlotte's Ballantyne Bowl, located at 14020 Stream Way. This is their first North Carolina location, which opened in October 2025. Their "claim to fame" is crispy crusts, soft crumb centers, and an ideal proportion of seeds coupled with house made schmears.

"A bagel is a round bread with a hole in the middle, and yet it's one of the most delicious things on Earth."

- Anthony T. Hincks

Not a big bagel fan. Amazing how so many days are associated with some food or activity.  Thanks for sharing and make it an exceptional day.

For me, too many carbs and I would prefer a jelly filled donut (Bismark) and again rarely have those.

Good morning Nina. A fan of the bagel, with a plain, cinnamon & raisin, and an onion on the top of the list. That said I don't consume 39 a year. Enjoy your bagel your way.

Wayne Martin I'm a bit more of a "purist," Wayne. I like plain, I liked salted and if I want to splash out, I like chocolate chip.

That's one thing we haven't found here yet - a good bagel. We even ordered some from NY but they weren't great either. Oh well!

Kat Palmiotti who did you order from in NY, Kat? I used to order from B&B and they were quite good. But it's been a long time, as Charlotte now has some great places for bagels.

Kat Palmiotti I used to buy great bagels at Zabars... maybe it's not quite the same if you ship them... and of course, it's been almost 28 years since I had a Zabars bagel.

Good Thursday morning, Nina. I did have a bagel for breakfast this morning: cinnamon raisin from Aldi. They have a bargain price. 6 for $1.95.

Hi Roy... that really is a good price for six bagels.

Yes, I started the day with two mini bagels with some smoked salmon and Boursin cheese with some capers. A little known fact about me is that I used to sell bagels going from office to office, loose bagels, bagel sandwiches, bagel sticks as a way to keep a roof over our heads when we first arrived in the US. I had to order and buy the stock for the day and then settle up the next day. It was always a challenge to order enough but no too much. I used to offload left overs at our local church to the grounds staff at a discount. Needless to say we ate a lot of bagels during that time.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I do like bagels. Some time ago, I ate them regularly. Then I stopped. A few weeks ago, I went inside the Bagel Store to buy one. I bought 3 - they were all gourmet bagels. But at least I didn't eat them all on the same day. This was the first time I realized how much bagels advanced - guess it had to do with competition with the gourmet cupcakes.

Happy National Bagel's Day!

Hi NIna- we used to get the best bagels when we lived in Delray Beach. We'd take them on the boat when we went out early. I love them lightly toasted with cream cheese and lox. YUM

Unfortunately, it's been years since I had one...carbs an all.

Jan 15, 2026 09:25 AM

Kathy Streib I could go for a bagel with cream cheese and lox right now!

The origin of the bagel dates back to the 17th Century Poland and Ukraine- so I think Monticello's claims are far more limited but given it's proximity to the Catskills...I sort of get it.

This time last year I was mourning the loss of Absolute Bagels on Broadway btwn 107 and 108 just a few weeks earlier. It was typical for the line to wrap around the block for that place and always won a spot in Top 10 lists for best bagels in NYC- often in the top 5 places. We were all in shock- as it was shuttered unexpectedly- but apparently had significant health code violations. I think what happened- a few months prior to it's closure- the supermarket next door closed, and the pests made their way one door over. It was still just too much for the owner and instead of fixing the problems, he just shut it down. There were a lot of people that would have paid the owner for the recipe and rights...but he was just done and didn't care anymore. Fast forward to the last week of 2025- New Absolute Bagels had a soft opening in the same location- employing many of the same staff, a gut renovation of the store and most important the same recipe/method. It's new owners, and they were willing to buy out the rights, but the old owner just didn't care about it anymore and didn't object to them using their recipe. So as of 2 weeks ago- we got our beloved bagel shop back.

Also some interesting knowledge- there was a bagel mafia at one point in the city and they held a strike- not to dissimilar to Kramer in Seinfeld (except it was widespread). I feel like much of my life is an unwritten episode of Seinfeld.

H&H Bagels is back in a more limited capacity than they used to be. Someone really cooked the books- left a hole in the accounting. Jokes aside, there was really an accounting scandal that caused H&H to shutter.
