Friday Fun…Your Go-To Cold-Weather Food

We’ve had weather that’s been like a roller coaster this winter. On Christmas Day, we wore shorts. Some of our days started in coats and scarves and ended in shorts and t-shirts.

So…as soon as it looks like we’re headed for super cold weather, our kitchen is fired up for chili and corn bread.

Nothing says you can’t eat chili when it’s 90 degrees out; however, when the temps drop (in Houston, that means below 50), it’s time to cook chili! In fact, when the weather reports predict colder temps, our grocery store has everything you need to make chili as you enter the store.

A friend loves a grilled cheese sandwich with soup when it’s cold out, and I have another who wants meatloaf and mac and cheese. My grandmother always made a big pot of stew with homemade biscuits.

What about you?  When it turns cold, is there a favorite food that calls out to you??

Well, since we have about 4 or 5 months of winter, I make lots of stuff, just like I do all year long!

Kat Palmiotti Thankfully, our winters are short!!!  There's something about stew or chili though, that makes the cold feel a little better.

Good morning Kathy Streib .  I am definitely ready for some Chili.  I was going to make some this week, but I didn’t have fritos!  I know that sounds silly but I love fritos in my chili.  I will have to make some this weekend since we are still going to be cold.

I usually don’t like the tomato soup and grilled cheese, but I had that already this year!  Let’s get back to some sunny, beautiful and warmer weather.  I am ready for it!

Brenda J. Andrew I love Fritos!!!!   I've been known to have them with my chili. A grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup are my go to dinners when I'm tired.

Good morning, Kathy... I don't really have a go-to cold weather dish... doesn't get all that cold here enough to think about it much. But, I did make a pot of chili last week and will be making more later this month.

Nina Hollander, Broker I may make some for the College final game on Monday. Or who knows...it's too early to say.

Hi Kathy,
Your post reminded me of my late SIL, Connie. She loved my grilled cheese sandwiches, which weren't anything special, as far I was concerned. As an interesting piece of trivia, rumor has it my mother made good grilled cheese sandwiches, too. I have no idea about that since she died so young.

Carol Williams   you know, I've never looked up a grilled cheese recipe!  I may do that and discover I've been doing something all wrong.

We had chili this week a vegetarian version which was yummy, I just had some leftovers for lunch. I love tomato soup and grilled cheese, but there are so many different curries I like making when it is cold like now.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I never would have thought of a curry for cold weather but now that I think about it, it makes sense. What do you make???

Jan 16, 2026 12:41 PM
Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543

Kathy Streib our favourite right now is a vegetarian curry, saag paneer, made with paneer cheese or with tofu. We eat that with some popadum and naan bread. We have a lot of Asian supermarkets near us so can get authentic ingredients.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I love green curry when I eat Thai food and I did try some Saag Paneer when you mentioned it once.

Kathy Streib - weather patterns have been taunting Texans this winter. The best solutions are to many good old fashioned comfort soups and chili. I make homemade soup at least once a week all year long.

Chicken noodle soup (made from scratch) is my go to. I have tried a lot of white chili recipes overo the years and never found one that we both liked so have given up on it.
