Are Door Knockers Still a Thing? Naples Says Yes - With Style!

In a world where video doorbells and smart locks dominate entryways, the humble door knocker might seem like a relic of the past. But in Naples - where design, architecture, and personality shine as bright as the Gulf sunsets - door knockers are making a quiet yet stylish comeback. Whether you live in a Mediterranean estate in Port Royal, a coastal contemporary home in The Moorings, or a charming bungalow in Old Naples, the right door knocker can serve as the perfect finishing touch to your home’s first impression.

A Symbol of Welcome and Personality

Long before technology took over, door knockers were a way to announce your arrival with a touch of elegance (and sometimes a bit of drama). Beyond their functionality, they were an artistic expression, a statement piece that told visitors something about the homeowner before the door even opened.

In today’s Naples neighborhoods, homeowners are rediscovering that charm. From bronze dolphins and sea turtles that reflect a coastal lifestyle, to polished nickel rings or lion heads that convey grandeur and strength, these small design details can set the tone for what lies beyond the threshold.

The Power of First Impressions

Your front door is the focal point of your home’s exterior. It’s the first thing guests see and the last thing they remember. A door knocker acts like jewelry for your front elevation—an accessory that adds character, depth, and dimension.

In Naples’ real estate market, where curb appeal can sway a buyer’s perception within seconds, that little touch can make a big impact. Whether you’re preparing your home for sale or simply refreshing your exterior, adding a distinctive knocker can transform your door from functional to unforgettable.

Pro Tip: Pair your knocker with a complementary door color and hardware finish. For example:

  • A brass anchor knocker looks stunning on a navy or teal door.

  • A sleek matte black ring knocker enhances the clean lines of modern white homes.

  • A polished chrome shell design adds sparkle to coastal pastel entries.

Trending Styles in Naples

Naples homeowners are known for elevating everyday design choices into luxury statements. Here are some popular styles that are currently gracing doors from Aqualane Shores to Grey Oaks:

  • Nautical Motifs: Shells, seahorses, starfish, anchors, and mermaids—each one a subtle nod to Naples’ seaside charm.

  • Modern Minimalism: Clean geometric designs or sleek circular knockers in brushed nickel or matte black finishes.

  • Classic Revival: Lion heads, eagles, and intricate scrolls that bring a touch of European grandeur to Mediterranean-style estates.

  • Artistic Custom Pieces: Local artisans and boutiques are crafting one-of-a-kind designs from reclaimed materials or hand-forged metals.

Local Shopping Inspiration

If you’re ready to add some flair to your front door, Naples has plenty of design resources. Boutiques like The Home Store at Third Street South and Bay Design Store often feature curated home accessories that include unique door hardware. You can also find an incredible selection at Hadinger Home or Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, where style meets function in every finish imaginable.

And don’t overlook local artisans, Naples’ thriving design community includes metalworkers and craftsmen who can create a custom knocker that perfectly complements your home’s aesthetic.

A Subtle Luxury That Speaks Volumes

While technology-driven entrances are practical, they rarely evoke emotion. A beautiful door knocker, however, feels timeless—it’s tactile, personal, and full of story. It can convey warmth, hospitality, sophistication, or whimsy, all before your guest even rings the bell.

So yes, door knockers are very much “still a thing.” In Naples, they’re more than that, they’re a statement of style and welcome, blending tradition and modern design in a way that only this coastal city can.

Your home’s exterior should reflect your personality and set the tone for what’s inside. The next time you think about boosting curb appeal, don’t underestimate the impact of that small but mighty accessory on your front door - it might just be the perfect detail to make your Naples home unforgettable.

Good morning, Renee... great title for a great post. Here in Charlotte so many of our doors, mine including  in three homes in the past 27 years, are glass, so door knockers are not common.

Thank you Nina. Thanks for sharing. Yes, with glass doors, door knockers pose a challenge :).

Hello Renee - I admit your post title initially made me think of a certain real estate marketing technique.  As for the "true" topic - it truly depends on some many different factors.  Come to think of it, the same can be said about hardware too.  Happy Saturday.

This is such a fun and thoughtful take on curb appeal. I like how you frame door knockers as design elements that tell a story rather than just hardware. It is a great reminder that first impressions are built from small details, especially in a market like Naples where style and presentation matter. Practical, creative, and very on point for homeowners thinking about subtle upgrades that make a difference.

Renee, you will see some door knockers on occasion, but think most have gone by the wayside.

Thanks Joan. I always thought the same thing but I have seen some popping back up down here.

While not all homes may qualify for a classic door knocker, they are still available.. There is a recycler in CT that has an area with strictly old door components, knockers included.
