Ask An Ambassador: My Blog Isn't Working

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

We've been here in the Rain for a long, long time, and many people have stated that their blog just isn't working for them.  And there are many ways a blogger can make that statement come true.

1.  Failing to understand the difference in ActiveRain accounts.  The free Rainer account is great if you want to just post to other Rainers, but it totally shuts you out of publishing to consumers.  Get the paid Rainmaker account to allow your posts to be indexed by Google, and work to gain the 500,000 points needed to get your Rainmaker account for free.

2.  Outsourcing your blogging and it shows.  Being the 5th person on the blog roll with the same photo and title doesn't help gain engagement.

3.  Forgetting this is a real estate site and not a reality TV drama show.  Provoking people isn't the way to gain referrals or clients. Some opinions are best kept to Facebook and X.

4.  Not blogging enough.  And related, not blogging enough of the RIGHT stuff.  Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint.  More quality posts, more digital breadcrumbs for consumers to find.

5.  Not unique enough.  If you're producing the exact same content as the major real estate portals and the other 2000 agents in your market, you're buried so far back in the search results a telescope won't spot you.  Think long tail search results.

6.  Forgetting geography.  Tristate, tricities, panhandle, etc, those terms aren't unique to just one area of the country.  Get some specifics about city names, general areas, etc. in your posts and titles to help you be found for YOUR market.

7.  Readability.  Font too small.  Not enough white space.  No pictures/graphics.  Spelling/grammar are a wreck.  People just have too many choices of how to spend their time to struggle with a hard to read post.

Bottom line, there are some fundamentals to follow that help increase the odds your blogging will bring you business.  And once you master the basics, your posts can continue to work for you for years and years.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

I think this is a great post - and sticking to long tail SEO makes a difference.  I got a call last week from someone who came to me because ChatGPT sent her my way - I was the only person (I am sure) to write about a particular community

Lise, writing about specific subdivisions has been one of the most productive ways for us to get found, even if sometimes it's title companies, lenders, or someone thinking we're the HOA property managers, at least we know the blog posts and IDX pages continue to rank well.

Hi Bill,
#6 rung a bell with me. I can't tell you how many times I've had to "hunt" for an agents location. Including the city name without the state isn't helpful. Recently, I saw a post about Bellingham. I didn't know if it was from Washington, Minnesota, or Massachusetts.

This is a strong and much needed reminder that blogging success is built on fundamentals, not shortcuts.

Your point about account type is critical and often overlooked. Agents expect consumer results while publishing only to peers. That disconnect alone explains why many believe blogging does not work.

I also appreciate the emphasis on originality, geography, and consistency. Blogging is cumulative. Each post is a long term asset when it is written with purpose, clarity, and local relevance.

Well said. This is practical guidance that newer and seasoned Rainers alike benefit from revisiting.

Gwen, I can't begin to count the number of fantastic, consumer oriented posts I've seen by newer agents, but limited to other members because it's a Rainer account.  It's a shame that they're missing their target market for what in real estate is a fairly low cost.

No doubt, the evidence is strong that many newbies don't realize an excellent consumer facing post has no consumer viz with a Rainer account.

Bill, when I first started blogging in 2010, it didn't take me long to notice there were ghost writers using material that anyone practicing real estate for as long as I was, since January 2003 was not who I recognized by name on ActiveRain or Profile. As they say, you can fool some of the people, some of the time, but you can't fool them all the time.

I continue to get people who call me as a result of AR and it's nice to know there are people comfortable with who I am, and how I blog. In any business, you have to be YOU.

And as a supplement, I can see using providers such as Keeping Current Matters for blog content.  But for local content that gets your best results, you need someone who knows and understands the local market.  And if I write my own content, I never have to wonder about something I didn't write, or having another party write something that doesn't best represent me and what I'm about.

I agree with all of these. Regarding #6, also, the town. There are 23 towns in the US named Monroe, and 13 named Carmel. Unless you know for sure that your town only has one occurrence (for example, Kalispell) then add the state when you're writing about the town.

Exactly.

And it may seem a bit clunky to include the state, but it's necessary to help out the search bots.  Let's get found by the RIGHT people!

It has not spend advertsing money on Google to parce names and realtor specialized area together. That is why one can not find them on the internet but shows it otherwise.

Bill you made very good points.  I have been around for a little while as well, and I always get a kick out of people who do not post anything with substance but complain they are not getting any business from their blogs.

Jan 20, 2026 02:06 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

George, it's a head scratcher.  There's something to be said for personal interest type posts (e.g. everyone eats, so a great crab dip recipe is good if you already have an established audience), but would any buyer ever google "real estate agent with the best dip for my football party"?.
I'll take my chances with new construction patio homes for sale in Cincinnati Ohio and if any of my clients want my best dip, then I can teach them how to mix Rotel into Velveeta and a few other ingredients (and hope their cardiologist doesn't track me down!)   :)

Consistency and engagement certainly do help here in the Rain. I am not always super consistent, but I do enjoy engaging with our members on this platform.

Hi Bill and Liz - thanks for these tips.  According to my billing information I have been on ActiveRain for 11 years (not even close to the time many of you have put in here).  In that time I only have 85 posts so, needless to say, I have not been consistent at all.

I have started posting a little more and am trying to figure out what is effective for my area and real estate in general that, like you said, is not the same content as the portals and all the other agents in my area.

Your post helps a lot.  Thank you.

Jan 20, 2026 07:33 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Vickie, even without blogging, I'm sure you've seen just how much you can gain in information from other members of this community.  There are many things I heard about in the Rain long before my local market or broker ever brought them up.

As far as most effective posts for getting consumer attention, I'm a huge fan of niches and posting about specific subdivisions or communities such as 55+.  Be more specific than Zillow and R.com and the other portals, and your chance of being found go up significantly.

sometimes it seems that blogs here are indexed to Google and other times it seems only posting to the outside blog gets indexed...what is reality?

Jan 24, 2026 10:08 PM

We used to have a custom ActiveRain outside blog, but that died many years ago, and our current blogging is primarily for other Rainers, so indexing becomes less important for our AAA posts.

Hi Bill:

There is an abundance of good advice here, for those are seasoned writers but particularly for those who are new. As you pointed out there are plenty of ways you  can sabotage blogging success and perhaps not realize you are doing so.
