Wordless Wednesday…But, They’re So Cute
Larry and I always have unshelled, unsalted, roasted peanuts in our pockets. We don’t dare step out of our back door without at least a few of them. The menagerie in our backyard has a few resident squirrels who love Casa Streib’s buffet.
Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day

As soon as we step out our back door, or they hear the garage door opening when we drive up…there they are. We used to have one who waited for us on our fence for his daily peanut as we walked from the garage to the back door.
We also have squirrels at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and Meyer Park, where we walk. One in particular at Meyer Park is called Mr. No-Tail for obvious reasons. Mr. No Tail knows how to squirrel it away.

When we see him on Sundays, he recognizes us and scampers over.
He takes two nuts (we’ve learned that most of the squirrels at Meyer Park take two at a time), quickly finds a place to bury them, then returns to us for more.
A few interesting squirrel facts:
- The buried nuts they can’t find have added trees to our wooded areas
- They can find food buried as far down as a foot of snow
- The sly squirrel may pretend to bury a nut to throw off thieves
- They zig-zag to escape predators

What squirrels eat…
- Nuts
- Fruits
- Eggs from birds nests
- Cheese
- Vegetables
- Insects
Just for fun and to show your appreciation:
I make suet (or, as Larry calls them, fat bombs) for our birds and squirrels. During the cold winter months, these are a special treat for them.
Just mix oats, natural peanut butter, sunflower seeds, raisins, and bits of fruit into a ball or square suet. I freeze mine, then take them out as needed.
Thank you to my squirrels for all of the fun you provide.
