Wordless Wednesday…But, They’re So Cute

Larry and I always have unshelled, unsalted, roasted peanuts in our pockets. We don’t dare step out of our back door without at least a few of them. The menagerie in our backyard has a few resident squirrels who love Casa Streib’s buffet.

Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day

As soon as we step out our back door, or they hear the garage door opening when we drive up…there they are. We used to have one who waited for us on our fence for his daily peanut as we walked from the garage to the back door.

We also have squirrels at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and Meyer Park, where we walk. One in particular at Meyer Park is called Mr. No-Tail for obvious reasons. Mr. No Tail knows how to squirrel it away.

When we see him on Sundays, he recognizes us and scampers over.

He takes two nuts (we’ve learned that most of the squirrels at Meyer Park take two at a time), quickly finds a place to bury them, then returns to us for more.

A few interesting squirrel facts

  • The buried nuts they can’t find have added trees to our wooded areas
  • They can find food buried as far down as a foot of snow
  • The sly squirrel may pretend to bury a nut to throw off thieves
  • They zig-zag to escape predators

What squirrels eat…

  • Nuts
  • Fruits
  • Eggs from birds nests
  • Cheese
  • Vegetables
  • Insects

Just for fun and to show your appreciation:

I make suet (or, as Larry calls them, fat bombs) for our birds and squirrels. During the cold winter months, these are a special treat for them.

Just mix oats, natural peanut butter, sunflower seeds, raisins, and bits of fruit into a ball or square suet. I freeze mine, then take them out as needed.

Thank you to my squirrels for all of the fun you provide.

Some interesting facts, Kathy, about squirrels I had no idea about. That being said, I'm unfortunately too familiar with the damage they do to houses when they get into attics. I have clients with some very large remediation bills.

Nina Hollander, Broker oh they can be a pain. Larry makes periodic checks around the house to make sure there aren't holes or places where they might enter.

Kathy Streib that's very smart of Larry... the problem is I know more homeowners who don't check their homes than do.

Thanks for sharing some information about squirrels I did not know. Out here we have burrowing desert squirrels though they look more like chipmunks. These critters will eat wires in vehicles.

Brian England I'm worried about the birds and squirrels with the upcoming ice storm. Hopefully, it will stay north of us.

We have lots of squirrels running around our property. In the winter they leave a huge pile of pine cone bits on a few of their favorite tree stumps. Mounds!

Kat Palmiotti thanks for the FB message about the squirrels. We'll see small branches that have been "cut" from the tree. The branches held small acorns.

Good morning Kathy. I have a friend who lives in Florida who has two squirrels that come to his garage door daily at 8am for their morning snack. If he is late they are waiting. My friend is constantly buying peanuts in big bags for the daily ritual. Enjoy your furry friends.

Wayne Martin my friend who lives in the country has to carry a bag of peanuts with her when she's out on the ATV checking out the property.

Hello Kathy - while I have heard squirrels dismissed as nothing more than tree rats, I agree they can provide an abundance of adventures in observation.

last weekend as we watched the squirrel in his yard eating the spilled seed under the birdfeeder my son made the point that squirrels have very little fat in their feet but there the squirrel was hopping around in the snow

Lise Howe I don't know how they do it. We'll watch them leap from the tree to the roof!  I'm always scared they'll fall and hurt themselves.

Kathy Streib - Those are great pictures you shared! I am a wildlife lover who likes to take photographs of them in action too. I have a squirrel in my yard I talk to, too. I swear he listens when I am outside. Sometimes, I can hear the squirrel running on the top of my fence rapidly, going back and forth. I discovered, it's his way of getting my attention to get some food out there for his dinner.

Patricia Feager And I'll bet you head out to feed them!!!  I love observing animals. During nesting season, I'll watch our bluebirds dive bomb the squirrels if they get too close to the nest.

Gray squirrels can have multiple color mutations. Some gray squirrels in Maryland actually are black in color while others are leucistic with patches of gray and white. Interestingly enough, a gray squirrel in Rockville has been found to be albino. Albinism, compared to leucism, is a complete lack of pigmentation. In albino animals, the eyes appear red due to the lack of pigmentation.

Hello Kathy and my squirrels are not that good that they get to close to us but they sure like our bird seeds.  I just updated my website at HammHomes.com, take a look and let me know what you think!

Will Hamm some of the squirrels are young and they don't get too close and that's ok. They should be cautious. I'll check out the site.

I'm back and checked out your site. It looks great! I love the Denver skyline photos.

Th squirrels are clever and will do almost anything to get to our feeders. I had to trim away a couple of overhead branches as the squirrels were diving down from above.

My nana used to feed the birds and squirrels every morning, and this reminded me of her.
