Severe Weather for Flower Mound, TX

By

Severe Weather Warnings for January 24 through January 26, 2026, in North and Central, Texas. Rain showers begin this evening and will continue through Friday, then the cold front moves in transitioning into a wintry mixture. The worst of the severe weather arrives Saturday morning, 1/24 through Monday 1/26.  Dangerously cold weather is expected with temperatures below 16 degrees. Extreme cold quickly becomes life threatening.

Prepare to Stay Warm

  • Dress in layers outdoors, wearing hats, scarves, warm socks, boots, coats, and gloves.

  • Make sure heat is adjusted not too high to cause the system to quit, but just warm enough to stay comfortable.

  • People with respiratory and lung disease stay indoors.

  • When temperatures drop below 30, let faucets drip with both hot and cold water just enough to trickle to keep the lines open.

  • Use space heaters with caution to prevent fires, keeping it at least 3 feet away from flammables.

  • Keep children and pets inside. Stack a pile of warm blankets. Have flashlights and batteries handy.

  • Cover spigots, fragile plants, and small shrubs.

  • Frozen pipes cause significant damage to properties.

  • Feed the birds and squirrels on Friday.

  • Make sure your gas tanks are filled and not empty.

  • Do not wash your car during the cold snap.

  • Have food and lots of water if power goes out.

  • Check on the elderly and help your neighbors.

  • Do not waste electricity. Use utilities wisely and conserve energy.

  • Houses built on slabs make floors feel colder.

  • Driving conditions are extremely dangerous on Texas bridges, ramps, and roads.

  • Never bring outdoor grills or generators indoors.

The Extreme Winter Storm Warning is for all of North and Central, Texas. The dangerously cold wind chills could result in hypothermia or frostbite. If you live in a house that is all electric, you may not be able to open your garage doors, turn on the stove or microwave to eat. Appliances will not run, and the house will feel like an ice box. The most frequent house fires start with woodburning fireplaces. Never run your car inside a closed garage.

Hello Patricia - whether its weather-related things happening around us or something else staying mindful about safety is wise.

Michael Jacobs - this is true! I'm hearing and seeing changes in 2026 that are not becoming, such as more firetruck sirens and vehicle accidents. Through it all, we must stay calm and practice patience whether it has to do with safety or the winter weather.

I wish you good weather and safety too. May you have a good day.

That doesn't sound like much fun at all.  I hope that you will stay safe and warm.  I remember attending my cousin's wedding, not the one when I met you, but the other one, haha.  It was nice and warm when we went into the reception, but then it was freezing cold when we left, and a winter storm had begun to come through.  I felt so bad for the wedding party since they still had photo sessions to do, haha.

Brian England - It's too bad your cousin's wedding was impacted with a sudden storm. The same thing happened in Illinois on the day of my daughter's 1st Holy Communion. Warm that morning; blizzard by afternoon. I had reserved a hall at the park, and catered food. Nobody showed up because of the weather because of the icy roads.

Good morning, Patricia... excellent suggestions. We may also experience some issues, but it doesn't sound like it will be as bad as in Texas. Stay safe, stay warm.

PS... I'm technically elderly and no one has ever checked on me (ever). I don't know if that's a compliment.

Jan 22, 2026 05:16 AM

Nina Hollander, Broker - It is a widespread winter storm, and many states will be impacted. By the way, nobody checked on me in 2021. I doubt anyone will this time either. I just have to be prepared and hope for the best.

Patricia, if you want to take a little trip further south you can come and hang out with us.  We definitely need to check in on you regardless.  Do your kids live close by?  You might end up having it better than us, we are just out in the woods.  We have a generator, but it won’t power the heat.  Hopefully we won’t lose power.  We’ve got my mom one street over.  If we do lose power, we will probably head to a hotel if there are any rooms available

Patricia Feager I get it.

Hi Brenda J. Andrew - My kids do not live in TX. One lives in Switzerland and the other in Wisconsin. The storm is due to hit up there too.

You are so thoughtful and kind. I would love to hang out with you to weather the storm, but I need to stay here in case the pipes freeze. I hope you don't lose power. Being out in the woods sound like you're located in a remote area. If you need to get to a hotel, I hope you find one that doesn't gauge you in price. When I used to travel to Austin, San Antonio, and Galveston for Real Estate Conferences, the rooms to rent were more expensive every year I traveled. The last ones I attended were over $1K because of the number of days I had to stay for being on the TX REALTORS Professional Development Committee's.

I hope you stay safe and the storm doesn't hit you severely. Take care!

Do you have a backup heater of some kind? If not, it sounds like you still have time to get one. Also, most garage doors come with a manual way to open them as well so hopefully people will figure out where those are first, just in case electricity is out. Stay safe and warm!

Great post Patricia.  I am not looking forward to this weather at all. As I was reading through your post I was thinking, I might need to get some tuna fish or canned chicken, maybe some lunchmeat. I need to get to the store today - probably like everyone else.  When we lived on the Island and had a storm like this I was able to sit in front of the fireplace with some hot chocolate working.  In our current home there is no fireplace!  Hopefully it is not too bad for us! Thanks for the tips and keep safe and warm!

Jan 22, 2026 06:06 AM
Patricia Feager

Brenda J. Andrew - I did go out two days ago to buy more toilet paper and a few other things. But I wasn't thinking about what to buy that doesn't require electricity to use my stove. My microwave was killed during the last electrical storm and I never replaced it. As for the fireplace, I had it serviced in 2022, just in case. But I found out, from an honest service guy who cleaned my fireplace, that the one I have is just a decorative FP and shouldn't be used at all. So, I never tried it, just ended up paying for the services. Why they build my house in 1994 with just a decorative FP and not a real one was really stupid. I was the second owner and never knew until I really needed a functional one, and not a piece of decoration!

I'll be thinking of you too, Brenda! Stay warm and safe. I need to run out and get more covers for my spigots and something to throw on my flower garden for protection. I'll be going to the grocery store too, looking for choices of what I can think of. At this moment, all I can think of are apples and oranges.

Kat Palmiotti - I do have 3 small space heaters for supplemental warmth. But they all need electrical outlets. I bought them in 2021 after the power came back on, but by then, the damage to my furnace was already done. It took six days to get the power back on, but the furnace was toast. Luckily one HVAC Service company had the part I needed to get it fixed back then. I never did get the original system replaced because the estimate for replacement was slightly more than $10,000.00. I don't want to be a popsicle or frozen.

As for the emergency release, I know where that is. However, when my house in 2021 was frozen, I couldn't reach the lever because of the height of my car and I couldn't reach it. I did end up getting new garage doors and the pull-down chord is lower. Which is good; however, even if I was able to reach it in 2021, the metal froze and I was told it wouldn't have opened up anyways. And if someone forced it open, the garage door probably would have fallen and damaged the car.

I'll just have to be on alert and if the temps drop below zero, get the car out and see if I can stay in a hotel.

Jan 22, 2026 06:14 AM
Kat Palmiotti

Yes indeed - a hotel would be a great idea Patricia Feager - I hate to think of you freezing in your own home! Do you have those toe warmers and hand warmers? The ones that activate with air? When I'm working in a cold room, I find that putting the hand warmers in my pants pockets or in my jacket pocket keeps my core warm, and they are also great in gloves to help my hands stay warm. And if your hands, feet and core can stay warm, it's a huge help!

Jan 22, 2026 07:36 AM
Patricia Feager

Kat Palmiotti - I did end up staying in a hotel. It was good and warm, and the food there was satisfying too. I haven't seen HOTHANDS HAND WARMERS here in Texas. Also, I do not shop Amazon. I'll have to ask my son if he has them where he lives. I still can't get a hold of him or anyone else in his family.

Jan 28, 2026 07:54 AM
Kat Palmiotti

Patricia Feager - I just did an Internet search and it looks like you can buy the hothands toe and hand warmers at your Lowes, as well as various other stores in the area.  And I hope you hear from your son soon!

Jan 28, 2026 09:30 AM

Kat Palmiotti - thanks for the information. I'll check the next time I stop at Lowes.

I'm hoping I hear from him or his wife soon. Neither one has gotten back to me. I sent text messages. It says delivered but not read.

Carol Williams - I survived but it's still very cold in my house. I can't help but wonder if my heat is out and all it's doing is blowing cold air. I ended up checking into a hotel that is on a hospital grid. The company I use is only going out for emergency services and the price is more. I will wait.

I'm home now, pipes did not freeze. I left water trickling down through the faucets before leaving. I wasn't on the Internet at the hotel, and this is the first time, I'm on. Our Town asked us to conserve electricity and stay off the internet.

Thanks for stopping by.

Wow, Patricia Feager
I'm sorry you've had to deal with that but at least you are safe and no frozen pipes! I hope your heat gets fixed pronto!

Carol Williams - you and me both! My insurance company does not cover frozen pipes - that's a major expense. Fingers crossed that we warm up here soon.

Thank you for caring. I hope you're doing well, staying warm and safe.

We are predicted to get 1/2 inch of ice.  I don't mind snow but I hate ICE.  Your list is very inclusive.  Good Luck, stay warm.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - I hate ice too. I stayed in a hotel but now I'm home. Driving home was very treacherous. I was glad I didn't encounter any other cars while I was driving, but then again, if I ran off the road or got in trouble, it would have been nice if someone was around to help.

I read my local news, and it still advises us to stay off the roads. Stores are closed, schools closed, no mail delivery, everything is closed except for emergencies like Fire and Police. A lot melted yesterday but this morning we were warned don't underestimate the slush and ice that refroze last night.

I hope you are safe and staying warm.

Thank you. I appreciate you keeping in touch and wish you warmth.

Good morning Patricia. Yep, this may be a major storm for sure. Here in Oswego, Illinois the temps could get to minus 7 with wind chill factor of minus 37. Not sure we will get much snow but areas around us could get up to 7 inches. Car gas tank full. Enjoy your day and stay warm and safe.

Jan 22, 2026 06:46 AM
Patricia Feager

Wayne Martin - I decided to check into a hotel because the community was suggesting finding warming places. Naw.... I decided on a hotel. I'm home now but I think my furnace is only blowing cold air. No services, unless it's an emergency and the price goes up.

I'm concerned because I can't get a hold of my son or members of his family up there in Twin Lakes. Hope all is well with you.

Jan 28, 2026 08:06 AM
Wayne Martin

Patricia Feager - Twin Lakes, Wisconsin may have gotten more snow than us. We only got a bit more than 2 inches. As for temps it may feel like zero right now with the wind chill factor @1:45PM central time today.
Did you reach your son?

Jan 28, 2026 11:46 AM
Patricia Feager

Hi Wayne Martin - I heard from my daughter-in-law. She assured me they are fine and all is well there. Whew! That was a sigh of relief for me. Here in Flower Mound, there was enough snow for the kids to find something to sled on and they were having fun. Maybe God makes children immune to the cold and gives them fun instead of the shivers and worries I get as an adult.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - I'd rather have snow than ice. 16" is a lot. I went to the grocery stores before the ice storm and most of the shelves were empty here. Our houses, infrastructure, and roads were not made for this type of cold weather.

I hope your experience is much better.

Hi Patricia- your area will be harder hit than where we are. From what I see, we're on the southern edge of the storm. I'm hoping our power stays on. Thankfully after the 2021 freeze and snow, Larry assembled a generator system that works for almost everything except the A/C and stove. We have alternatives for that . We have small space heaters and two radiator heaters that run on our generator power.

I went to HEB early Wednesday to pick up some last minute fresh produce, etc and it was packed.

Stay safe and stay warm.

Kathy Streib - The cold icy weather is not good for my bones or anyone else's either. I am staying safe but concerned about my heat, all I'm getting is cold air. No services unless it's a true emergency and the costs will be more. I checked into a hotel for 3 days but home now and I wish I could have stayed where it was warm.
