Walking the High Desert Dirt Requires Vigilance

By
Real Estate Agent with Dirt Road Real Estate SA676002000

Often rural land buyers walk for sale vacant land without real estate agents. These individuals see for sale signs out in the middle of nowhere or close to the middle of nowhere and decide to leave their vehicles to walk some of the “dirt.” Unfortunately, walking the high desert dirt requires vigilance.

For example, out here in NW AZ, Mohave County, Golden Valley, AZ there are numerous holes in the ground.  These are homes to ground squirrels that look more like chipmunks from my perspective.

Often there are numerous holes within a short distance. These holes soften the surrounding dirt and one can find himself or herself suddenly standing in a hole from 3 to 6 or more inches deep.  And in that hole is not a ground squirrel but a legless and often dangerous critter, a venomous snake because snakes can’t dig holes. Snakes use these ground squirrels’ homes as their own nesting or resting places.

Additionally, some folks view the high desert as flat.  That is a misnomer. The topography of the high desert is undulating ground.  This coupled with rocks, lots of rocks from small to big  plus vegetation with sharp thorns makes walking vacant land potentially dangerous. Also driving dirt roads one also finds lots of rocks and washes where the road suddenly goes down 6 inches to even 3 more feet.

For those wanting to walk for sale vacant land or even take a hike in the high desert of NW AZ, please be vigilant. Watch for those holes, vegetation with thorns and other critters so you can stay safe.

P.S. Please consider checking out my Facebook business page, The Grit and Gratitude Agent that will focus on the Dirt Roads in Mohave County as well local real estate, lots of dirt or vacant land parcels as some of the local attractions.

Good morning Leanne. Walking vacant land in the high desert is not without risks and those risks should be given serious consideration. Thanks for the tips. Enjoy your day.

A bright ad sunny good morning to you Wayne from NW AZ.  Thank you for stopping by and yes walking vacant lad in the high desert is not as safe as some have been led to believe.  Stay warm as I hear a winter storm is on the way.

For intelligent folks, they do have an expert, or hopefully an expert. When I walk vacant land with buyers, I use OxHunt to find property corners or as close to property corners as possible. Thank you and Happy Thor's Day Nick.

Hello Leanne Smith and I know I be worry about walking vacant land in some areas,  snakes or more would not be thrill seeing.

I agree not fun seeing snakes. So far I have not seen any snakes touring vacant land. However in the summer I don't go very far into vacant land because of the snakes even tho I do wear boots and carry a hand pistol.

Leanne, I have sold several parcels of raw land in and around Denver, and if I had seen a snake, would never be back again.   Falling into one of those holes would not be good either.

Good morning and have yet to encounter a snake when touring vacant land. We have had both non-venomous and venomous snakes on our 2 acres here in Golden Valley.

I would be perfectly content to walk the beaten path if I were even attempting to walk in a desert.

This is good advice, Leanne. And running across wild creatures, especially snakes, keeps me from walking land. Fortunately we all have our preferences as to what we sell. To me selling land is beyond boring... you love it. I love selling homes.

All areas in the US have different critters including snakes. Back in NW IN we had only non-venomous snakes.  And we all have different preferences in our choice of real state. I appreciate those who love to sell houes in the city.  For me, selling dirt gets me closer to appreciate nature and the variety within nature from critters to plants to people. Good morning Nina Hollander, Broker and happy Freyja's Day or for some it is called Frigga's Day.

LOL, Leanne Smith I just call it Friday, Leanne! :))) When it comes to snakes, I don't care whether they are venomous or not... I'm terrified of them. I can't even look at pictures of them.

Agreed not a big fan of snakes. However I have learn to adapt and be very cautious when walking our property as well as vacant land. Winter is a better time because most of the snakes are hibernating.

I am sure that you have become quite adept in telling the difference between a gopher hole and a snake hole, right?

Yes and up here we have very few gophers.  There are some badgers but their holes are much larger. Also the coyotes have dens in the ground as well Good morning Brian England
