Friday Fun…Is Yours Legible?

When I read that today is National Handwriting Day, I was taken back to third grade. It was in this grade that we learned cursive writing. I have no idea if they even have this in school anymore.

My classmates and I were excited to learn a big kid skill. My teacher had us write these big circles with our pencils, then these up-and-down lines, to practice the writing movement. She would ask us to hold up our papers, then she praised the ones that looked good.

Mine was never picked. To this day, I can’t even read my own handwriting!  My printing, on the other hand, is pretty good!!!

Does anyone write anymore? Sure, we take notes and on occasion have to sign something, but for the most part, it's pecking at a keyboard.

Even though texting is quick and easy, we all appreciate a handwritten note, even if it’s just a few sentences.

So for some Friday Fun…

How’s your handwriting?

Do you print or write??

Good morning, Kathy... oh my goodness... with arthritis in my thumbs I could probably blind someone with my handwriting these days!

Nina Hollander, Broker  my handwriting, at best, could be called scribble.

Kathy, My keyboard sees more action than my pen these days, but I still enjoy sending a handwritten note when it really counts.

Good morning Kathy. I am left handed with lousy handwriting. My son is worse. My printing in capital letters is pretty good, so that it what I use for important notes. I don't have any memories of learning in school. Then again I went to the Chicago Public Schools. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I do a combo of writing and printing. Larry's mother's handwriting was even worse than mine.

My handwriting used to be so nice, but it has certainly gotten worse over the years, and it makes me wonder if I have a bit of arthritis, haha.

Brian England I doubt you'd find someone of a certain age who doesn't have a bit of arthritis. We're like a fine car beginning to need an overhaul.

I find it kind of sad that we no longer teach this in our schools. We have simply dumbed down our school system.

Hello Kathy - unfortunately, my handwriting is no longer legible.  My 90-year-old mom's cursive remains impressive.

I can write cursive, but tend to print more often than use cursive, the last few years my thumbs have been painful so not writing so much. But I was listening to a program on NPR yesterday and they were talking about a book called The Correspondent, I believe that is encouraging people to write letters to each other. Here is a link:

Being old school, I still use paper and pen specific to both my personal and professional lives. My handwriting is legible when I take my time and very artistic, flowing per my husband. I do print and the printing does have little tails not the straight lines I was taught. My sense is one's handwriting gives some insight into the person's priorities and even character. Great post to remind us how much things have changed.

Leanne Smith I used to try to add some "flair" to my handwriting but I would have to concentrate to do it.

The flair comes naturally and hence why I must be careful.  My handwriting has been described as artistic and sometimes hard to read.

Kathy I still use handwriting to write notes, but handwriting is becoming a lost art.  It is no longer being taught in many public schools.

George Souto I'm going to ask my mini=me if they teach it here.

Kathy, I thought I had heard the districts cut handwriting in schools, which is sad.   I do still write in cursive, but times when we have to print.

Hi Kathy:

Yes, I still handwrite notes, to do lists, and more. My writing is not so neat any longer, and when the arthritis in my hand flares up the writing is really a challenge.
