Don't look back, because SOME THING might be gaining on you!

Satchel Paige

Satchel Paige

This is a quote from hall of fame baseball player Satchel Paige after he was 42 years old and was brought up in 1948 to the Cleveland Indians in the Major Leagues from the Negro Leagues. Old Satch was a mighty pitcher, and he had a way with words. He started at age 42 in the majors and played till he was 59 years old. Satch knew a thing or two about not looking back and seeing all those young 20-year-olds trying to take your place on the team's roster. Note, Satch said "some one" may be gaining on you.

Now 2025 may have been a year that you might not want to look back on in real estate. There may have been some monsters that were lurking and may have even taken a bite out of you a few times. Don't look in that side view mirror...give the car some GAS and race on to 2026 in life and in real estate.

This past year I had some nice home sales, and I can reflect on those nice ones and project them into 2026. There were some doozies has well in 2025. I remember helping a client move up to midnight and coming back early the next day to finish before the new owner moved in. The movers had abandoned my client and had left for another job. Yikes. Think happy thoughts only.

This year is off to a good start. Let's keep it moving right along. Keep your eyes wide open and looking forward. Steer the car where you WANT it to go. What you see in the rear-view mirror only tells you where you have been. The monsters of 2025 are behind you now. Those monsters cannot steer where you are going NOW. Think positive and head to THAT happy place.

Jeff, great analogy and tribute to an all time great. He had the mental game that nailed his outer performance. A lifetime example for us all.

Old Satch overcame a lot in life and accomplished a lot. A real American story. Don't look back, only ahead to a new tomorrow.

Good morning Jeff. Satchel was indeed ageless. He was a gift to baseball. Why? He refused to age until he got his shot. He kept his eye on the target. And he destroyed the monsters. You can too if you look forward and avoid the rear and side view mirrors. Keep driving. Enjoy your day.

Look through the front view mirror and not the rear view mirror such like Satchel. Thanks Wayne as always.

Loved the photo and the credit.  Your analogy with Satchel Page was outstanding. I am reminded of this quote by Emerson:

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us".

Thank you for your entry, much appreciated.

Great message, Jeff. This is a powerful reminder that momentum comes from direction, not reflection. Learning from the past matters, but living in it does not move you forward. The Satchel Paige quote fits perfectly with the theme of experience, resilience, and staying focused on what is ahead. 2025 may have had its challenges, but 2026 is shaped by the choices made now. Forward vision, steady motion, and positive focus are what build the next chapter. Strong perspective and a motivating start to the year.

Thanks Gwen. Yes, don't let the past guide the ship going forward. Looking back in a ship we see the V trail in the water, shows us where we have been, but the steering wheel guides us to where we go next.

Wishing you much success and good health as you focus eyes forward. No one should look in that rear view mirror for fear of missing something good in front of you

Well said Ed. Steer the car give it gas to somewhere you want to go.

Hi Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI
We all have those years that leave a few dents and scratches, but they also give us stories, strength, and perspective. I appreciate the reminder that the past can inform us, but it should not control our direction. Here is to a strong, focused, forward-looking 2026.
