From Lost to Logos: My Journey to Brand Design

By
Real Estate Agent with Avery's Design

When I was 16, I didn’t know who I wanted to be—just that I had to become someone. I was a teenager in Barbados, staring down two uncertain paths: community college or the working world. I felt like a small fish cast from a familiar river into an endless ocean.

So I chose college, almost at random. I enrolled in the architecture design program, thinking, Well, I’m good at technical drawing… maybe I’ll just draw buildings for a living. I didn’t love it—but it was something.

But that first class changed everything.

We weren’t just drawing. We were designing. We were learning to think abstractly, to create beauty with function. Design, as it turns out, wasn’t just about things looking good. It was about making things work beautifully.

That shift lit a spark in me. And near the end of the program, it caught fire.

We were given a simple assignment: design a logo for a phone dock we were creating. I forgot about it until the night before it was due. I panicked, then remembered what the teacher said: “Logos should be simple, bold, memorable, and scalable.”

So I followed the rules and made something quick—five minutes, tops. The next day, my classmates laughed. They said it was too simple. “You’re gonna get roasted in critique,” they told me.

But when I presented first, the unexpected happened: my teacher loved it. I passed with flying colors. The rest of the class, with overly complex logos? They got picked apart.

That was the moment I realized I understood design on a gut level. Not just what looks good—but what works.

From Hobby to Purpose

After graduation, I dabbled in freelance logo work. But I quickly discovered the gap between making something pretty and making something effective. I wanted to design logos that not only looked good—but told a story, built trust, and helped businesses grow.

So I went all in.

While working retail and sales jobs, I spent every spare dollar—thousands over time—on books, courses, and real-world training. I learned about branding psychology, font theory, scalability, strategy, and positioning. I didn’t want to be “just a designer.” I wanted to be a brand partner.

Eventually, local business owners started finding me. And slowly but surely, I started building brand identities that helped them step confidently into their next chapter.

Why It matters

Today, I specialize in brand identity design for entrepreneurs, startups, and growing businesses—especially in spaces like fintech and real estate, where trust and professionalism are everything.

Here’s what sets me apart:

  • Strategic Thinking: I don’t just make things pretty—I build visual systems that move your business forward.
  • Personal Investment: My client's brand brand matters to me because I know what it’s like to not have direction. Helping businesses find clarity and confidence through design is my passion.
  • Endless Curiosity: I never stop learning. Trends shift, markets evolve, and I stay ready—so my client's brand never feels dated.

This really resonated with me. Your journey shows a deep understanding that great design isn’t just about aesthetics, but about function, clarity, and trust—and that’s something many businesses overlook.

I’m currently building a real estate company and strongly believe that strong branding and strategy are foundational, especially in trust-driven industries like real estate and fintech. I’d genuinely be interested in exploring ways we could collaborate or exchange ideas. Your approach aligns closely with the kind of partners I value.

Thanks for sharing this—very inspiring.

I loved learning more about you, and would certainly enjoy reading more posts like this about what has happened in your life, or what is going on in your life!  I love that when you were 16, you didn’t know who you wanted to be, but that you had to become someone.  That statement is powerful, and it doesn't seem like kids these days have that same sort of drive.  My nephew just turned 16, and I sure hope that he develops some true drive soon.  Sadly, his Mom has influenced him towards the wrong path so far in his young life, and it breaks my heart.

Good morning! This was a great way to introduce the history of your brand design business. I took a look at your logos via the link above - and I loved the Ornate one - simple but also ornate!
