Indecision Is a Decision Not to Take Action

By
Real Estate Agent with Dirt Road Real Estate SA676002000

Years ago, when I was active in my executive strategic leadership consulting and sales coaching practice, I made this statement:

Indecision is a decision not to take action.

This statement came from listening and watching my clients make excuses not to take action, not to do what must or should be done.

The other day I came across this quote by Epictetus in his “Discourses”

"First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”

Henry Ford words are a branch between my thoughts and Epictetus:

"Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

Self-belief is a mindset, an attitude which is a habit of thought.

Napoleon Hill recognized:

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.”

Of course, sometimes our first attempt to achieve what we want is not successful. Yet, Winston Churchill shared:

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm."

In other words, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." (Various citations)

Determination is attitude partner within one’s mindset.  As the days turn into months and the months complete another year possibly the words of Tommy Lasorda may be additional motivation

“The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination.”

P.S. Please consider checking out my Facebook business page, The Grit and Gratitude Agent that will focus on the Dirt Roads in Mohave County as well local real estate, lots of dirt or vacant land parcels as some of the local attractions.

Well said, Leanne Smith! Momentum rarely waits for certainty — it tends to reward clarity and commitment instead. Indecision feels safe, but it quietly costs more over time.

So true about the cost.  When momentum is built upon specific goals with specific actions steps including due dates, clarity and even more importantly results are achieved. Indecision is often quite costly as you shared. Thank you for adding your thoughts to this conversation.

I just had this discussion with someone recently and we both agreed - if you have a decision to make and you don't make one, you just did.

And from my experience when this statement or similar statement is made the other indecisive person often feels uncomfortable. Appreciate you sharing your recent affirming conversation. Thank you and good morning.

Good morning, Leanne... I've long loved all those quotes, except the one by Winston Churchill, which is new to me. Love it, too! As I've often said "when you don't make a decision, you've made a decision."

Hello, my thoughts are: "No decision is a decision."

No matter who we slice it or what words are used, it all boils down to the same thing.

Yes indeed it all boils down to the same thing. Thank you Kathleen

Leanne Smith in my opinion why people are indecisive is because in lack of confidence in themselves.  I think they would be more decisive is they came to the realization that not deciding is a decision that most of the time come with bigger consequences than if they had made the decision to act.

I believe what you suggest is true. Thank you for your insight as to this issue of indecision.

They say you should believe in yourself to the point of delusion. The only limit in what we can and can't achieve, is within our mind.

Yes indeed as Napoleon has said along with many of the old Greek philosophers.

Couldn't agree more.  There are those that can't make a decision because htey are stuck in procrastination, which is also a sign of depression.  Approacing those types of personalities is a little more delicate.  I've learned that technique thanks to my sister who exhibits all of those traits.  It helps to understand those traits in real estate, especially when a seller has lost a spouse.

GREAT post Leanne!

Yes the causes of indecision are many. Sometimes I believe we can add unrealistic expectations also to the mix of causes.  Good for you to know how to handle such situations. Thanks for sharing your experience and KuDos to you as well.

Lots of great quotes, Leanne Smith

What it all boils down to is that one needs to make the decision to move forward and find what the experience will bring. You can't let fear stop you.

Feb 05, 2026 06:01 PM
Leanne Smith

So true about fear. I have always used this acronym for FEAR as False Evidence Appearing Real. Indecision is often because the person believes in false evidence. Thank you and good morning.
